The way in which Plato announces his novel Metaphysics has been puzzling scholars for a long time. Did Plato really introduce Change into the Transcendent World and thus abandon his Theory of Unchangeable Forms? 
Many of Plato's commentators have claimed that the use of modern techniques of logico-semantical analysis can be a valuable aid in unravelling this problem, as well as other difficulties Plato raised and attempted to solve. In this commentary, Plato's own logico-semantical approach to metaphysical problems is followed.

Modern German poetry virtually begins with the adoption of the alexandrine and other Romance verse-forms by Martin Opitz in 1624. There were earlier unsuccessful attempts to introduce them. This book is concerned with one of them: the use of alexandrines on German broadsheets published in Holland before 1624 and the important part played in it by the engraver Christoffel van Sichem I, who appears here in a new light. His life and work and associates in Basel and in Holland are explored in depth, and much new information about him is brought to light, which will be of interest to art historians. The literary historian will find much that is new about the early stages of German baroque literature, including a study of a non-Opitzian tradition of German poetry in Switzerland.

Paperback. This volume revives a most remarkable essay by the French philosopher Jean-Marie Guyau (1854-1888) on the genesis of our idea of Time. The original text, La Genèse de l'idée de temps, written in Guyau's widely acclaimed style, is accompanied here by its first translation into English, and by several chapters highlighting Guyau's thought and contemporary significance. Central to his argument is his thesis that time is an acquired organisation of representations enabling humans to store and remember past events. The cognitive functions or strategies that realize this organisation nearly always establish coherent episodes that are situated in concrete, spatially defined contexts. Such a position is remarkably consistent with modern cognitive views about knowledge representation and memory. Guyau is in fact so modern that readers may at times forget they are reading a century-old text.

In this volume, recent studies on bilingual development are presented. Previous studies on bilingual development give no reason to believe that the process of language acquisition in bilinguals and monolinguals is different in its basic features. The essential difference is that bilingual children are confronted with two sets of input and that they have the additional task of distinguishing the two language systems. However, the very complex process of learning to separate two different languages is still poorly understood. It remains unclear what sort of operating principles children use while acquiring two languages at the same time. It is also unclear under what conditions processes of language transfer and code mixing occur. Moreover, most of the studies that have been conducted so far were limited in their scope, given the fact that the languages under consideration were highly related. In the present volume, the simultaneous or successive acquisition of two unrelated languages are dealt with. In order to allow for crosslinguistic comparisons, different language varieties in various countries are taken into account. The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 gives an overview of studies on early bilingual development. The focus of Part 2 is on bilingual development at school age and beyond. The analysis of learner data in two unrelated languages should give new perspectives on the role of structural properties of these languages in the process of acquisition.

Coherent vortex structures emerge in quasi-2D flows, and the topic of this book is therefore relevant to researchers in oceanography, meteorology, fluid dynamics, plasma physics. The book is a collection of extended abstracts of contributions to an international meeting on coherent vortex structures, and provides a useful description of the state-of-the-art of the subject. Specific topics covered include stability/instability; self-organization of 2D flows; vortex interactions; effects of background flow and vorticity; topography; and advection properties. Modelling approaches covered are theoretical (analytical, maximization or minimization of physical properties); numerical (direct simulations, spectral methods, clusters of point vortices, contour dynamics, contour kinematics); and laboratory experiments (rotating and stratified fluids).
