This vol. begins with a history of Philadelphia to set the scene for letters written in Philadelphia by visitors over the past 300 years since the city was founded by William Penn in 1682. In reading these letters, one becomes aware of a host of warmly appreciative comments. The selection of letters collected here, chosen from a myriad of possibilities, demonstrates what a rich genre this resource is & illuminates the immense contributions by those who, however, briefly, chose to dwell amongst us. Catalogue of an Exhibition at the Rosenbach Mus. & Lib., Phila., from the Lessing J. Rosenwald Collection at the Lib. of Congress. In 1922 Lessing J. Rosenwald strolled into the Walnut Street bookshop of Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach. As though predestined, they soon formed an incomparable team: Dr. Rosenbach happily luring treasure after treasure across the Atlantic to Walnut Street, & Rosenwald happily escorting them a few miles farther, to Jenkintown. So, in due course, a Phila. suburb became world-renowned as the home of the greatest collection of illustrated books & prints in private hands. Ultimately given by Lessing to the nation, this magnificent achievement is now permanently installed in the Lib. of Congress & the Nat. Gallery of Art. Illus.

Visitors to the Rosenbach Museum & Library in Phila. are amazed at the wealth of rare books, manuscripts, & works of art found within the walls of this small townhouse, maintained much as it was when the Rosenbach brothers lived here. Drawings by Fragonard & Gravelot, among other artists such as William Blake & Honore Daumier, decorate the wall of the second floor sitting room. This current exhibition has been organized to permit for the first time a detailed examination of several suites of drawings from the collection by Fragonard & Gravelot. The Rosenbach Museum & Library here presents many of its best-known volumes & re-examines oft-told tales of the Rosenbach brothers (Philip & Dr. A.S.W.) & their legendary buying & selling of remarkable books. As a result of extensive research in the Rosenbach Company Archive & in the papers of English libraries & collectors, Leslie Morris has reconstructed the Rosenbachs famous purchases from the Holford, Phillipps, & York Minster collections in considerable detail & has compiled -- for the first time -- checklists of the 297 individual titles acquired by the Rosenbach Co. in these private treaty sales. This exhibition could include only a selection of volumes from the complete checklists. Illustrations.
