Homeless and low-income youth have a high risk of failure at school and involvement in substance abuse, crime, violence, and unemployment. First Exposures has helped youth achieve real changes in their lives. During their participation in the program, all First Exposures students have remained in school without dropping out. All participants either maintained or improved their grades, and 100% of high-school-aged students expressed interest in attending college. After participating in First Exposures, many youth have secured jobs, pursued further education in the arts or enrolled in college. These achievements are especially significant because this population generally has a large dropout rate in high school. The benefits of this program extend beyond the individual participants in First Exposures. Youth are encouraged to give back to their communities through exhibiting their work in public venues. These displays reach a large audience to encourage greater community awareness about the perspectives of low-income youth. The exhibits also enable students to express their viewpoints and take pride in their accomplishments. This book will take this concept even further by exposing their work to a much larger audience. The general theme of the book is about Relationships. The 16 students of the 05/06 class create the primary section of this book. Each student has created a chapter, or section, on the theme of relationships. The rest of the book documents the 13-year history of First Exposures using archival images and text from past &amp; current mentors and students. There are several essays, including a foreword by best selling author Dave Eggers. Relationships define mentoring. In First Exposures we use our relationship with photography to foster the relationship between mentor and student. When we talk about relationships we are thinking beyond the obvious definition of a familial or love relationship. We look at how we interact with others, with objects, places, spirituality and art. If you examine a relationship closely you will discover that just about everything that crosses our daily paths creates a relationship of some sort. Perhaps the most important relationships we have are with our families and loved ones. These are the basis of who we are. While these relationships may not always be positive, they exist and help to form who we are, or as is often the case "who we aren’t. Traveling On a High Frequency is 304 pages of pure rock and roll intensity created where light and motion, energy and magic all collide together and crystallize on a piece of film. This photographic journey includes images Jay Blakesberg made as a suburban NJ teenager in the late 1970's of such diverse artists as Muddy Waters, Crosby Stills &amp; Nash, Roger McGuinn of the Byrds, The Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton, and Bob Dylan. After his arrival in San Francisco in the mid 1980's, this serious hobby transformed in to a career with assignments from leading music magazines documenting the newly exploding birth of alternative rock. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Jane's Addiction were all playing small clubs and starting their ascension to the top while Blakesberg was there to capture it on film. A 1987 assignment for Rolling Stone Magazine photographing a free U2 concert in downtown San Francisco was the beginning of a string of over 250 assignments for the venerable rock magazine. With higher profile assignments came opportunities to work with artists such as Carlos Santana, Tom Waits, John Lee Hooker, Radiohead, Neil Young, Sammy Hagar, BB king, Tracy Chapman and many others. Onstage, in the photo pit, backstage, on location, and in the photo studio is where Blakesberg spent a solid 22 years documenting the true zeitgeist of the pop culture experience known as ROCK and ROLL. Capturing that "Magical Musical Moment" for magazines, record companies, and the artists themselves required a combination of creativity, technical knowledge, and a passion for the music that was unfolding in front of his lens. Traveling On A High Frequency: Photographs 1978-2008, Jay Blakesberg

Far from the bridges and cable cars, hidden away behind the famous hills, there is another San Francisco Bay Area that most people never see. San Francisco's Hunter's Point and Fillmore District, West Oakland and Richmond's Iron Triangle - in the 1970s these places on the edges of this great American metropolis offered Barry Shapiro an alternate reality where he pointed his lens. Although Barry made his reputation as a professional photographer with the 1972 publication of Handmade Houses: The Woodbutcher's Art, his day job as a teacher of remedial reading to adults gave him an entrÃ©e into a world that white America only saw in the blaxploitation films of the day like "Shaft” and "Superfly.” His curious eye brought him to many dangerous places, but with the trust he earned, he was able to not only hang out in this unique subculture, but be allowed to photograph their very intimate and sometimes dark moments. In these photos we see glimpses of tenderness that can explode into violence, tension that dissolves into laughter, kids showing off for the camera, and tough motorcycle gangs chilled out after a night of hard partying. What instantly captures the viewer's attention is that Barry, with the force of his energetic personality, established a trusting relationship with each of his subjects, whether that relationship lasted for years or only a few seconds. When Barry wasn't hanging out in these fringe neighborhoods, he was prowling the streets of the Bay Area with his stealth Leica shooting poignant black-and-white moments of street life through the windows of his VW bus. These images record an incredible slice of everyday urban life without any hint of his even being there. Barry captured what Henri Cartier-Bresson called "the decisive moment” over and over with a natural ability that only the best photographers have. Always a maverick, rarely inclined to shoot to spec and unwilling to compromise or cater to photographic fashion, Barry shot his black-and-white photographs with no thoughts of commercialism. Although his career as a photographer spanned more than forty years, and he spent the last sixteen years of his life as a high-school teacher and principal, he never stopped shooting. With a foreword by famed San Francisco rock photographer Jim Marshall and an introduction by best-selling novelist Mark Joseph, two of Barry's closest friends, A Dangerously Curious Eye will show you a very different side of the San Francisco Bay Area.
