The Graphic Design Archives Chapbook Series celebrates the achievements of key design pioneers whose work is collected in the Special Collections department of RIT Library. From the inaugural acquisition of the Lester Beall Archive in 1986, RIT's holdings have grown to include the work of seventeen designers. Extensive collections of personal papers, business records and artwork by Lester Beall, Will Burtin, George Giusti, and Cipe Pineles form the cornerstones of the Archives. Lester Beall: Space, Time &amp; Content explores the work of Lester Beall through reproductions of RIT's comprehensive holdings. Beall (1903-1969) gained prominence through his ads, posters and identity projects commissioned from such high-profile clients as the Chicago Tribune, Collier's and Time magazines, the Rural Electrification Administration and International Paper Company. Throughout his career, Beall's award-winning design and high principles made him a favored lecturer in professional and educational circles. He is now considered as one of the chief proponents of the American Modernist Design movement. R. Roger Remington, Professor of Graphic Design at RIT, has been seriously engaged in the research, interpretation and preservation of the history of graphic design for over 20 years. He has written extensively on the subject and is presently working on a book on Modernism in American Graphic Design.

As printing from movable type was perfected in the fifteenth century, the mysteries of its practice were guarded by a privileged few. The rapid spread of the new art depended on the reliable mechanism for transferring knowledge. By the end of the seventeenth century, however, the pioneers of manufacturing technology and scientific inquiry were prying away at trade secrecy. This book shows the history of printing manuals from 1683 to the end of the nineteenth century, including some of the rarest in existence from the Cary Collection at Rochester institute of Technology.

Teaching Photography, Notes Assembled is a slim, unassuming book that has been an unexpected hit in photography circles. This expanded edition features an additional chapter and is co-published by OB Press and RIT Cary Graphic Arts Press, both affiliated with Rochester Institute of Technology. In Teaching Photography., Perkis draws from four decades of teaching experience at such institutions as Pratt Institute, and Cooper Union, as well as School of Visual Arts in New York. He has distilled his knowledge into this volume of thoughts on visual perception, successful photo lesson exercises, and practical teaching advice for photography instructors. Perkis expresses his acute observations as a means of provoking discussion and inspiring the younger generation of photography students and educators. Carefully typeset with ample margins and devoid of photographic images, the reader is encouraged to exercise the mind's capacity to visualize - a vital tool for the art of making photographs. PHILIP PERKIS attended the San Francisco Art Institute and studied with Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, and John Collier, Jr. He served as chair of photography at Pratt Institute and is currently on the graduate faculty for the School of Visual Arts and Tisch School of the Arts, NYU. Ismar David (1910–1996), an artist of extraordinary range and ability, mastered a variety of media during the course of his long career in Berlin, Jerusalem, and New York. In tribute to his achievements, RIT Cary Graphic Arts Press has now published The Work of Ismar David—the first comprehensive volume on the designer’s oeuvre—that includes vivid reproductions of his book and type design, illustration, calligraphy, and architectural adornment. Content for the book was selected from the extensive Ismar David Archive, held in the Melbert B. Cary, Jr. Graphic Arts Collection at Rochester Institute of Technology.

This book chronicles all aspects of Sentinel’s inception. Essays by Jim Yarrington, director of RIT campus planning, describe the sculpture’s place in RIT’s unique architectural environment. Sam Hunter, professor emeritus at Princeton University Department of Art and Archaeology, contributes an authoritative essay on the influence of Albert Paley’s work in the context of art history. The book also includes a candid interview with the artist himself, as he discusses his thought process and the engineering decisions that went into the design of the Sentinel. The evolution of Eastman Kodak Company’s pension investment program from the inception of its pension plan in 1928 through 2004. The author, Russell L. (“Rusty”) Olson, a consultant on institutional investing, retired in 2000 as director of pension investments, worldwide, for Eastman Kodak Company. Olson had overseen Kodak’s pension funds since 1972. Over the 1980s and 1990s (and through 2004) Kodak’s pension fund was one of the best performing pension funds in the United States. Kodak made contributions to its pension fund in only two of the 22 years, 1983-2004, and it is one of the best-funded corporate pension plans in the country.
