Shangaa: Art of Tanzania is a lavishly illustrated survey of the traditional art of Tanzania, with essays by leading art historians from the United States, Tanzania, South Africa, and Germany, who draw on fresh research in the field. This standalone volume accompanied the exhibition of the same name, which debuted at QCC Art Gallery, City University of New York (CUNY) and went on to Portland Museum of Art, Maine. Curated by Gary van Wyk, it was the first major exhibition outside of Germany and Tanzania to focus on this topic, and this is the first comprehensive volume in English on Tanzanian art. The 342-page book is lavishly illustrated with the art work that was on exhibit and is in other collections, along with both archival images and contemporary photographs of art practices. It includes a specially commissioned map, a comprehensive index and bibliography, and promises to be an indispensable contribution to the field of African Art.

Among the great mysteries of Africa's distant past, small carved stone figures often found by chance by the local farmers in Sierra Leone and Guinea, West Africa, have intrigued observers for more than a century. Who made them? For what purpose? Who do the human figures represent? When were they made? The local people who find them under the ground, usually in the course of digging gardens, have no idea of their origin, attributing them to mythical people who preceded their own ancestors. The farmers usually create small shrines to house these discovered sculptures in order to make use of their mystical power. In this book, the author has analyzed thousands of these stone figures and the data on their discovery and collection to determine a geography of their distribution and to speculate on their dating that greatly expands the limits previously assumed. He has also investigated the earliest written sources as well as the ethnology on this area for clues to how the figures might have functioned in ritual, what ancient cultural group was responsible for carving them, what kinds of people they represent, how they can give us information about the societies before written history, and who might be the modern descendants of this rich ancient culture.

In Carving Life. Walrus Ivory Carvings from the Bering Sea, Eleanor M. Imperato presents her personal journey into the world of the Alaska Inuit and specifically, carvers of walrus ivory in Gambell on St. Lawrence Island, Shishmaref on Sarichef Island in the Chukchi Sea, and in the King Island community of Nome, Alaska. In her narrative Imperato explains what she learned from her encounters: the meaning of living a subsistence lifestyle, the challenges of procuring ivory, the process of carving and reasons for doing so. With her words, she brings into sharp relief the lives, aspirations, and talents of some of the carvers she came to know; with her photographs she illuminates the land they call home. She provides modern stories of modern people who carve walrus ivory for local and distant audiences. The author also discusses in her text, as does Dr. Anne Millbrooke in her introduction, past and current outside influences that have and are altering a traditional way of life. The text is richly illustrated, as is the catalog section which includes Alaska Inuit carvings in walrus ivory as well as bone and caribou antlers. By way of comparison, the author includes many ivory, bone, and soapstone sculptures that represent the Inuit of Greenland and Canada. The bibliography that is provided is extensive and will invite the reader to further deepen their knowledge of historical and current issues. The book was published to accompany an exhibit by the same name at the QCC Art Gallery, City University of New York, held from October 18, 2017 until January 17, 2018.

This is the first publication featuring Ann Goerdt's distinguished collection of African deformity masks and figures. Published in conjunction with an exhibition held in the QCC Art Gallery / CUNY, the book examines the cultural meaning, and ritual use of these enigmatic artworks including an in-depth look at the medical history of the region. The publication considers an extensive range of physical abnormalities and their corresponding illnesses. The sculptures in the Goerdt collection orginate from a variety of cultures throughout Africa with an emphasis on the Ibibio in Nigeria.
