also occurs. New outbreaks of yellow fever have occurred in Colombia and Trinidad and new outbreaks of rift valley fever have occurred in Egypt. Chapter 6, Arenaviruses: The biochemical and physical properties have now been clar ified, and they show a remarkable uniformity in the various viruses constituting the group. The possibility that prenatal infection with LCM may result in hydrocephalus and chorioretinitis has been raised. Serologic surveys have suggested the existence of Lassa virus infection in Guinea, Central African Empire, Mali, Senegal, Cameroon, and Benin, in addition to earlier identification in Nigeria, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Chapter 7, Coronaviruses: New studies have confirmed the important role of these viruses in common respiratory illnesses of children and adults. The viruses are now known to contain a single positive strand of RNA. About 50% of corona virus infections result in clinical illness. About 5% of common colds are caused by strain DC 43 in winter. Chapter 8, Cytomegalovirus: Sections on pathogenesis of CMV in relation to organ transplantation and mononucleosis, as well as sections on the risk and features of con genital infection and disease, have been expanded. There are encouraging preliminary results with a live CMV vaccine, but the questions of viral persistence and oncogenicity require further evaluation.

Since the discovery more than thirty years ago that antibody actlvlty could be localized to discrete plasma protein fractions, the study of immunoglobulin struc ture and function has dominated the field of immunochemistry. During this time, sources of homogeneous immunoglobulin molecules have been discovered, the subunit nature of the proteins has been defined, and the three-dimensional struc tures of the antigen-recognition portion of several antibody molecules have been elucidated. Insights into the complicated genetic control of these proteins are being gained rapidly through analysis of amino acid sequences of naturally occurring and induced homogeneous immunoglobulins. Immunoglobulins have been analyzed by protein chemists as models of complex multimeric systems, examined by geneticists studying serum protein polymorphisms, and employed by molecular biologists as highly selective probes capable of distinguishing minor features of molecular topog raphy. Clinical applications have ranged from the now routine quantitation of immunoglobulin levels to the use of antibodies to detect trace levels of a variety of natural products and drug metabolites. All these applications have depended ulti mately on a thorough understanding of the immunoglobulin and its antigen-combin ing site. To cover the entire field of immunoglobulin structure and function would require many volumes this size; therefore, subjects presented in this volume represent those which we felt contribute most to our current understanding of this protein family. Any addition to the ever-expanding list of scientific publications requires careful consideration and justification. There are already numerous journals in analytical and clinical chemistry adequate for the publication of research results. There does remain a need for a series focused on analytical and clinical chemistry, to provide an overview of instrumental developments relevant to the needs of analytical and clinical chemists. This is the role intended for the present series. Although the title specifically indicates that the series will deal with analytical and clinical chemistry, our intention is that it will deal with analytical chemistry as related to other areas, such as air and water pollution, oceanography, earth sciences, and various aspects of biomedical science and technology. It seems appropriate to publish two types of articles in the series. First, we will provide a forum for authoritative, critical reviews for the expert, to enable him to cope with the ever-growing problem of keeping abreast of rapid developments in his own and immediately related fields. In this way we hope the series will stimulate new ideas for research by being at the cutting edge of science. Second, we will publish articles written by experts in the fields being covered but primarily intended for the nonexpert, thereby providing him with some overview of the area.
