For many years the author would regale us with his near photographic memory of deeds done and adventures held. So many times one or another in the listening group would beg, “You should write a book.” But, the author’s non-stop life never seemed to allow for time in between to write down his tales and adventures. Other than a few stories published in the military magazines of the day, most were kept in the memory of the author. As Major Farrell would too often remind us, the hallmark of Special Forces is that we were always the “Quiet Professionals”. We told our stories among the group, never outside the community and too often not even among our immediate family. If you want a book, go find a SEAL! He was too busy living life to bother recording his life. Today, following the 9-11 attacks and in the years to follow in what has become America’s longest war, the level of respect given to our Special Forces has grown by leaps and bounds. It was not always that way. The “Big Army” had a visceral hatred of those men who wore the Green Beret. Tons of lessons learned were cast aside and only that small kernel of soldier that managed to hang on during the post-Vietnam era remained to pass down what life in a war zone was truly like.
