Due to our deeply held fears, we all create “resistance” to the natural and organic flow that would otherwise effortlessly move our lives. Near the root of these fears is the fear that we will one day die and then cease to exist. However, because of the way our universe is built, this fear of death is completely unfounded. “The Architecture of Freedom” explains why death, or our passing into a state of nonexistence, is impossible. Freedom is living our lives without this fear or “resistance,” so that we are fully available for all the amazing possibilities that then will begin to flow forth. Learning to live this way is about learning how to live in the “present moment” or “now.” When we live fearless lives in the “now,” we become directly connected to a different and amazing way of being–our birthright. In this way we access the deeper parts of our being to share a type of universal awareness that is healing for each individual and for our entire planet. Imagine a universe where everything is possible and every idea is fully realized. Everything–all that we consider good or bad, saintly or evil, beautiful or ugly–already exists along with anything else that any person or being could ever dream or imagine. What if you could choose from all of these things to construct your perfect life? Amazingly, this is much closer to the true form of creation than the world that we usually imagine. All of these possibilities are happening at once and we all have the ability to choose which parts of this “everything” that we will experience. We cannot choose using our brains or even our minds; instead, we choose with the entirety of our vibrational being. It is not easy for us to understand this type of choosing because so much of our universe exists and operates in realms that we can’t directly access with our minds or five senses. Even though we don’t have full access to the full extent of this amazing space, it is always fully interactive with our lives–it creates everything that we do and experience. A large part of life’s beauty derives from this mystery, which only exists because, in our present form, we are not yet capable of understanding the infinite nature of creation. If we could understand the full extent of creation, we would see clearly that we are all one being, that time is an illusion, that we never will die, and that everything that happens is exactly perfect for the evolution of our soul. We are not here to understand creation–that is not our purpose. We are here to gain experience by fearlessly participating in every aspect of life. This is true freedom. Understanding more about the real structure of creation can help eliminate many of our common fears; it is these fears that prevent us from living our lives in freedom. I have devoted a large part of my life to exploring the occasionally visible edges of this truth. This book describes my personal adventure and the process that brought me to this realization. It is my hope that this book might serve others as a helpful guide for this, our common journey.

This book is about our universe, our most recent science, our spiritual search, our experience, and how all of these support the once crazy idea that we are here to live lives guided by the uninhibited expression of personal freedom. I define freedom as letting go of those things in our lives that block us from experiencing our birthright, which is living fully within the flow of this infinite creation—a flow that is shaped by a deep type of connectedness that we sometimes call Love. When I published my first book on this topic, The Architecture of Freedom, some readers requested a shorter version. This book is a response to that request. While the ideas in this book are not critical for living, they certainly can help make our lives much more enjoyable. Our primary purpose is to explore, express and share our individual and unique gifts so that all of us, together, can know and fully experience life’s amazing possibilities. When we resist this calling our lives appear difficult, dangerous, and limited but, when we embrace our true purpose, everything changes and our lives begin to flow perfectly. Even if we change nothing, collectively, we will still be fulfilling this role perfectly. However, there are an infinite number of ways to experience life and, as this book illuminates, we each have the absolute power to choose our own personal experience. In fact, each of us is the only person that can determine our experience because no one else is even involved. Living our lives with this different awareness, one in which we fully understand that each of us is an important and integrated part of something much greater than our old and obsolete vision of separate competing individuals, will powerfully influence how our lives appear and feel. We literally have the ability to change the appearance of our entire world by learning how to change our deepest hidden beliefs. Human culture has evolved three distinct pathways for collecting, assembling, and saving knowledge. First, we gain knowledge from our direct, everyday personal experience. Next, we have our cultural and spiritual traditions that have been passed down through the generations. Lastly, for over 2,000 years we have built a great body of knowledge through formal scientific study, research and experiment. While all of these three directions can help us to better understand our lives and creation, each direction, in isolation, also has aspects or parts that can seem incomplete or even wrong. Historically, these three important information sources have often appeared very different and separate, at times even in conflict or contradiction with each other. It is only recently that we have started to recognize that there is a substantial convergence or overlap: a common region where experience, spirituality and science actually share the same expansive vision. Since spirituality, experience, and scientific study all represent our attempts to understand truth at a deeper level, the region where they intersect and overlap should provide fertile hunting ground. To this end I discuss personal experience, my own and others’; our spiritual traditions, and our paradigm-changing science of the last one hundred years. I show how all three of these traditions point towards the same ideas–actually a single, unified idea that is disguised as many to work with our mode of thinking. While some of these ideas are technically un-provable because of their very nature, I will show them to be fully supported and reinforced by each and all of these three very different traditions. When we examine our cultural history in more detail, we find that many existing and ancient cultures have traditions that include the recognition of a similar expanded vision for life, traditions that closely parallel the discoveries of our most recent science.

A Path to Personal Freedom

Who are we? What is our purpose? Why do we often feel unhappy or incomplete? How do we best live our lives? While questions like these have long been the focus of human curiosity, satisfying answers have been surprisingly rare. However, recently this search has changed dramatically because we are now re-visiting these ancient questions from a new and expanded perspective. Quantum physics and Einstein's relativity, together, have become two of the most paradigm-altering scientific breakthroughs since the flat-Earth days of Copernicus, half a millennium ago. Today, after an entire century of experiments, we are finally arriving at a point where scientists and philosophers can relax their disbelief enough to speak more openly about what these very consistent experimental results might mean. This new emergent vision is not just a clarification or expansion of older ideas; instead, it permanently and radically changes everything that we once believed about the manifestation, potential, and purpose of our small planet, the entire universe, and even the extremely mysterious process that we call life. We are now beginning to understand, as many traditions have long foretold, how the entire universe can also be found within everything in existence, including a grain of sand and each of us. Today, as more scientists discover surprising new patterns of interconnectedness throughout our universe, what seems to be emerging is the recognition of a deeply intertwined relationship that some scientists and philosophers describe as an expression of "oneness." While it may seem that we are only a small part of an enormous universe, today we are realizing that the truth may be just the opposite: everything that we once experienced as being outside or external to ourselves, originates from within. We don't just live in our universe, the entire universe also lives within each of us. Our culture is relentless in its messaging about the need to improve ourselves. We find that no matter how hard we work at this, the difficulties we experience in our lives rarely seem to subside, at least for long. This isn't because we aren't yet "good enough." It happens, instead, because our conscious awareness is incomplete and not integrated, leaving most of our activity to the large unconscious, or "dark," parts of our being. When we operate through this unconsciousness, we just repeat our old familiar, but often disruptive, patterns. Growing beyond these dysfunctional patterns is not about choosing the "good" parts of ourselves and rejecting the parts we think of as "bad." It also does not require that we learn more or something new. Instead, to dissolve these old automatic patterns, we must become more whole and integrated. We can only do this by bringing illumination to the uncomfortable darkness hiding within all of us, a shadow world dividing our naturally whole being into many broken, isolated, and incommunicative fragments. This, our most important journey involves a process of discovering, welcoming, and honoring all parts of our authentic and complete being, especially the vast areas of inner darkness that we fear and avoid the most. This book describes one such journey: the very successful process that radically changed my life through the discovery and conscious illumination of my personal shadows. My life today is powerfully energized and filled with satisfaction and joy, but it has not always been this way; for most of my seventy years, my experience was the complete opposite. Today, instead of life appearing to work against me, I experience a world that always works in joyful harmony with my entire being. In this book, I describe my healing journey and the new perspective that changed absolutely everything about my life.
