The period scrutinized is 1460-1520 but the geographical coordinates are widened to include Northern Italy (Venice, Milan, Pavia, Padua, Bologna) and Rome as the artistic landscape of Italy becomes more complex. Some of the great sculptors, in fact, travelled and their style and their ideas influenced pre-existing local tradition. These new artistic languages share a common characteristic: the relationship to Greco-Roman Antiquity, especially in the representation of grace and passion: the expression of pathos and the theatrical quality of religious works, the symbolic richness of profane works and finally the development of a new and refined style which will find its highest expression in Roman classicism and in the work of Michelangelo. The catalog includes the works of, among others, Donatello, Antonio Pollaiolo, Bertoldo di Giovanni, Giovanfrancesco Rustici, Francesco di Giorgio Martini, Guido Mazzoni, Bartolomeo Bellano, Cristoforo Solari, Tullio Lombardo, Andrea Riccio, and Bambaia, Sansovino, and Michelangelo. This volume, dedicated to modern sculpture (Late Renaissance to Baroque to Neoclassical), marks the start of a new general catalogue of the collection. The introduction narrates the history of the collection, from its creation by Cardinal Scipione Borghese in the 17th century to its sale to the Italian Republic at the end of the 19th century. The entries are full of chronological details, new attributions, information on restorations and account for the different historical settings thanks to an accurate study of the inventory records of the villa. They include world-famous masterpieces by Algardi, Bernini and Canova among others. The sale to Napoleon of many of its Antique works of art (now in the Louvre) was key to the Borghese's commission works of ancient inspiration, the analysis of which animates the pages of another section, based on the concepts of copy and remake. The catalogue closes with a section on restoration, that gives an account of the fundamental role of 16- to 18th-century sculptors in the maintenance and transformation of the archaeological collection in relation to the villa's display requirements. Ugo Mulas and Alexander Calder. A great photographer and a great artist bound by close friendship. The visible fruit of this relationship are the hundreds of photographs of the histrionic American artist, his family, his works, and his houses in Roxbury (USA) and Sache (France) taken by Mulas: a 'family album that showed the love for his work and the joy that his friendship gave me'. The carefully selected photographs presented, edited by Melina, Ugo Mulas' daughter and a well known photographer in her own right, evidences the role of unspoken art critic played by Mulas.As Argan writes, the photographer was able to capture 'with incredible delicacy the genetic affinity between the works and their creator, and at the same time their intimate contradiction, as if the lightness of the sculptures atoned for the sculptor's heavy bulk and their capriciousness matched his kind-hearted, unpredictable character, the nature of which is expressed by the tufts of his white hair, ever tousled by a non-existent wind'.Born into a family of artists, Alexander Calder (1898-1976) showed right from his infancy an approach to the manipulation of materials that was to change the course of modern art. An outstanding inventor of wire caricatures and animals (see, for example, his famous Circus), at the start of the 1930s Calder developed into the construction of abstract sculptures in which he soon included moving pieces. These sculptures, which he called mobiles, are among the most famous artworks of the twentieth century. In them, Calder 'took matter and transformed it into an image as light as a puff of air'. Ugo Mulas (1928-1973) was one of the greatest Italian photographers of the last century. His enormous interest in the world of art is attested by the photographs he took at the various Biennali in Venice between 1954 and 1972, and by his superlative recording of the art scene in New York, which he carried out in different stages between 1964 and 1967.

Painter and draftsman of animals for Louis XIV, Pieter Boel (1626-1674) is now widely recognized as one of the best animal painters of the past.
This large-size book presents 40 paintings and drawings of this extraordinary observer of nature. Boel’s pieces were particularly lively because he was inspired by the living birds and mammals he was able to observe in the Versailles Menagerie, established by Louis XIV in 1664 and soon a model for all the European courts.
The studies were used as models for animals reproduced in the foreground of the famous Gobelins tapestries, which decorated several royal mansions. They are replete with details of the animals, seen from different viewpoints, and are admired for the quasi-tactile rendering of fur or feathers. The drawings included show Boel's keen eye for rendering movement.
