Pragmatically interpreted, pluralism or the doctrine that it is many means only that the sundry parts of reality may be externally related. Everything you can think of, however vast or inclusive, has on the pluralistic view a genuinely 'external' environment of some sort or amount. Things are 'with' one another in many ways, but nothing includes everything, or dominates over everything. The word 'and' trails along after every sentence. Something always escapes. "Ever not quite' has to be said of the best attempts made anywhere in the universe at attaining all-inclusiveness. The pluralistic world is thus more like a federal republic than like an empire or a kingdom. However much may be collected, however much may report itself as present at any effective centre of consciousness or action, something else is self-governed and absent and unreduced to unity.

This autobiographical novel tells the story of Stephen Dedalus/James Joyce through a series of brilliant incarnations which awaken the evolution of his own aesthetic perception.  From his impressionable beginning as the youngest student of Clongowed Wood school to the religious struggle of a day school in Dublin and, at last, to college where he confronts his traditional upbringing and its effect on his faith and academic liberation.  This complex investigation is remarkable because of its brilliant portrayal of a child intellectually blessed and, at the same time, ruined by a middle-class existence.  The reader follows Dedalus through incidents of bullying and into troublesome sexual and emotional events against a background of discrimination in the Catholic Church.  Joyce's work is luxuriantly clever and an exceptional achievement of style and technique.

P.G. Wodehouse is at his whimsical best when the characters of Belpher Castle muddle through impending catastrophes and frivolous intrigue to figure out who belongs to whom in this comedy of errors.  We begin with the American George Bevan who composes musicals and is in England to attend a performance of one.  After the show, Lady Patricia Maud Marsh slips into his taxi in an attempt to escape her brother, Percy, who has fashioned himself protector of the family name, and her father, Lord John Marshmoreton, whose sister, Lady Carolyn Byrd, is trying to marry Maud off to her step-son, Reginald.  George suddenly witnesses the members of Belpher Castle as overbearing relatives, loutish familiars, and literary snobs in Lord Marshmoreton's idyllic home.  Maud has mistaken George for another man she fell in love with earlier because of the American accent.  Wodehouse's plot twists and vaunty satire portray scheming servants who make bets on the capricious attachments of the Castle's inhabitants and the aunt-dominated Earl who loves to garden and is half-heartedly writing the family history.  These marvelously comic eccentrics spend their aristocratic leisure aghast and preoccupied.

This is a series of vignettes by Louisa May Alcott that illustrate the idea by Sir Philip Sidney that "They are never alone that are accompanied with noble thoughts." The reader is introduced to several young women who discover great satisfaction when they do what each can do and still have a renewed desire to be of more assistance while also witnessing the more somber parts of life. In "Pansies" Mrs. Warburton assures others that "hearts don't break if they know where to go for strength." Ruth asks in "Water-lilies" if she can be forgiven her modesty, courage, and faithfulness. Rosamund of "Little Button Rose" declares "you've made my troubles go, can't I make yours?" Finally in "Mountain-Laurel" Becky realizes that she can become a more useful and honored woman by putting the directives of her poetry into her life than by singing for her fame. For the characters of Alcott's Garland, "When everything seemed darkest, good luck came."
