No one in Northern Ireland needs reminding of many of the events in the province during the bloodiest years of the troubles.  In 1971, the then Home Secretary for Northern Ireland, Reginald Maudling said he could foresee a time when IRA violence could be reduced to an "acceptable level." People weren't quite sure what he meant.  We know now of course and have lived with an acceptable level of violence for more than twenty years.  Alex Ashe has chosen to tell the story of this "acceptable level of violence" through the events of that fateful afternoon when a bomb ripped apart the Abercorn Inn in March 1972.  Ashe has created a series of well rounded characters, who inhabit the distinctive world of the 70s, with it's new-fangled decimalisation, chic suede fringed waistcoats, bus tokens, platformed heels and blue eyeshadow.  Other hallmarks of that era -tarring and feathering, for example, crop up again and again, bringing a first hand feel to this compelling novel.  It is these small details which help make the larger events ring true -and Ashe trawls right through the horror of the 70s, sparing us nothing; a thumbnail description of a night out at the La Mon hotel; Lennie Murphy's psychopathic leasure pursuits; the Loyalist strike that closed down the Province entirely.  Ashe's debut novel hangs over the memory like a pall of smoke. It's no surprise to learn that the author is writing under a pen name and wants to keep her real identity hidden.

An Acceptable Level of Violence

This is a story about a journey within a journey: an inner journey and an outer journey, both set in the context of urban mission. The inner journey provides the meat of the narrative, whilst the outer journey provides colour, excitement, intrigue and drama. The stimulus for the outer journey arises from the author's experiences in living out her Christian faith in the inner city of Birmingham UK, as part of a church-based community project; this has raised issues and dilemmas that she needs to resolve, especially the Church's reponse to women in leadership. She decides to visit other women involved in urban mission, across the world, to see their work and to talk to them about their experiences of male oppression within the Church. In addition to women's leadership, she examines the issues of personal poverty (and indeed, the 'double poverty' of Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity); the true nature of forgiveness and whether it can occur without confronting, and gaining acknowledgement of, in inherent injustice in a situation; and, the challenge of the 'Three Degrees of Humility' in urban situations. The issues are uncovered prayerfully during times of meditation during the inner journey, which starts in a prologue to the outer journey, in the first four chapters of the book, and continues throughout the outer journey to Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore, Australia, Thailand and India. These travels provide a stark contrast to the inner meditatory journey. The women she meets during the outer travels include Jackie Pullinger-To, Veronica Silva, Dorothy McRae-McMahon, Mother Teresa and others; her discussions with them and some of the intriguing situations she finds herself in, as she travels alone, help to bring some answers to the dilemmas of her own urban ministry. These women speak their own stories, as do the poor amd marginalized people that she meets in thye streets and byways of the cities she visits; the homeless and destitute, heroin addicts, prostitutes, women who are victims of domestic violence and military rape, street children, families in poverty, lepers, beggars and orphans. Their stories become bound up with her own. Much of the inner journey is brought to a focus during a silent prayer retreat in Manila. here, in a wonderful picture of horses galloping freely across a valley, without rein or harness, the Lord provides an affirmation of the author's free spirit and comissions her to further urban ministry for him. The book is written mainly for women, especially those who feel called to urban mission, but is of interest to both sexes, especially the wider political issues arising from her journey: global warming, the effects of globalisation on the poor, Christian involvement in sociopolitical issues.

This book examines Britain's war memorials, commencing with the white marble statuary erected in Britain's cathedrals in the 19th century to commemorate great commanders, through to the utilisation of bronze casting techniques in the 19th century to commemorate significant military figures and regiments. The British memorialisation process would be given added impetus by the magnitude of the nation's losses in the Great War. Immediately after that war, memorials would be erected by the Imperial War Graves Commission, schools, universities, businesses, clubs, municipal authorities, regiments or formations of the armed forces, or in some exceptional cases by the nation to commemorate a particular individual. Some communities erected no memorial at all. As will be seen in this study, the forms employed were limited only by the ingenuity of the individuals and organising committees concerned. They would include: literal statuary in stone and bronze, memorial chapels, ornamental fountains, plaques, Celtic crosses, Crosses of Sacrifice, obelisks, screen walls, clock towers, brasses, steam locomotives, musical instruments, cottage hospitals, retirement homes, rolls of honour and books of remembrance. The forms employed after the Second World War would include: bombed out churches, aircraft, boulders and that curious phenomenon, the war memorial bus stop. There are some 70,000 war memorials in the UK alone and the process goes on to the present day, with memorials still being erected to the fallen of a number of conflicts. Through a representative range of examples, this study explores the background, politics, financing, policy issues, organisations and personalities associated with the memorialisation process.
