This attractive volume chronicles the settlement of the area around Casco Bay, including present-day Falmouth and Falmouth Foreside, Yarmouth, Cumberland, Harpswell and some of the bay islands, from the early 17th century down through the 20th century. Rowe was a skilled writer -- other books by him include the maritime History of Maine; Shipbuilding Days in Casco Bay; and Shipbuilding Days in Old North Yarmouth. Rich in insight, Rowe's accounts of the people who built these coastal towns, of the importance of the shipbuilding industry to the area and the state, and of the growth of commercial, educational, social, and ecclesiastical life in North Yarmouth and adjoining towns, combine to awaken in the reader a sense that this is history as it was lived. 
Genealogical material includes lists and biographies that are a valuable assist in searching family lines. Among the appendices in Rowe's work are Indian Place Names, lists of town officers, state legislators, soldiers in the Revolutionary War, soldiers in the War of 1812, Army and Navy records, Civil War soldiers, roster of Yarmouth in World War I, pastors of Yarmouth churches from the 1700s, list of vessels built in Old North Yarmouth and Yarmouth, as well as the names of the builder of each vessel. A revised and updated "Locations Mentioned by the Author" section helps identify early historic landmarks whose surroundings have changed. 
A new combined Subject and Every Name Index will make researching names and subjects much easier.

Hoyt's classic study of the early families of Salisbury, Amesbury, and nearby areas within Massachusetts and into coastal New Hampshire and York County, Maine is very highly regarded. The original was published in four soft-cover volumes in 1897, 1902, 1916 and 1919; we have reprinted them here in a single massive volume, with continuous pagination for your convenience. There are four separate and quite complete indexes, and you will find, in addition to detailed genealogies of the early settlers and their families for the first few generations, copies of such rare early original sources as the various church records, original town lists of the first settlers; 17th century tax lists, etc. The hundreds of meticulously detailed genealogical sketches of the immigrants and their descendants make up 95% of the book, bringing researchers back to Salisbury and Amesbury again and again. Many of the family sketches include the English origins of these early 17th century settlers. The quantity of records given for each family varies widely. A number are given full genealogical treatment covering 7 or 8 generations; among them the Colby, Currier, Davis, Littlefield, Morrill, and Wells families while other families are covered for only the first few generations. Salisbury and Amesbury remains a truly excellent starting place for your early research in this area.

Chase wrote the definitive history of Haverhill; the standard source for historians of the area for several generations. This new edition, with the added benefit of a new Every Name Index compiled by Picton Press, has been brought out with the support of the Haverhill Historical Society. 
Over 50 lists, including early settlers, landholders, marriages, births, deaths, soldiers, public officials, etc., bring the past alive. The new Every Name Index, together with the large general subject index, make all of the data compiled so meticulously by Chase, available to all of us. 
The large separate 1861 map in the back pocket was added especially for our reprint. It shows clearly the residences, public and business buildings, roads, graveyards, etc. 
This is an important book which should be owned by all researchers interested in Haverhill and its environs.

Robinson (this history was subsequently edited by Theoda Mears Morse and published in 1944) and of then having had A Genealogical History of the Families of Morrill, Maine, by Theoda Mears Morse and Charles & Nellie White, published in 1957. Both books are quite rare, and thus students of Morrill and its neighboring community of Belmont (from which Morrill was separated in 1855) are doubly lucky to have this consolidated reprint of both books done in 1983. The town records of Morrill and Belmont were lost in 1855 in a fire at the store of John Crawford, town clerk, making this history unusually important in any research on the Morrill and Belmont communities. This new reprint now contains Picton Press's customary Every Name Index, making it even more valuable for researchers.
