According to Kent Carter, author of The Dawes Commission, for the actual process of Choctaw enrollment, "A commission was appointed in each county of the Choctaw Nation under an act of September 18 to make separate rolls of citizens by blood, by intermarriage, and freedmen; it was to deliver them to recently elected Chief Green McCurtain by October 20, but he rejected them even before they were completed because of charges that people were being left off for political reasons. On October 30, the National Council authorized establishment of a five-member commission to revise the rolls within ten days and then directed McCurtain to turn them over to the Dawes Commission on November 11, 1896. The Choctaws hired the law firm of Stuart, Gordon, and Hailey, of South McAlester to represent the tribe at all proceedings held by the Dawes Commission," another indication that throughout the Commission's efforts there was always controversy between the tribes and the negotiators. The results of these proceedings are contained in 6,100 Choctaw enrollment cards (National Archive Microfilm M-1186, Rolls 39-46). All of the cards list householders' ages, sex, degree of blood, the parties' relationship to head of household, county, Dawes Roll Number, and date of enrollment by the Secretary of Interior. The contents also give the enrollee's parents' names as well as miscellaneous notes pertaining to the enrollee's circumstances, when required. Most entries indicate whether a spouse was an Intermarried White. When completed, this multi-volume series will contain thousands of names, all of them accounted for in the indexes.

This book was originally published in 2004, now it has been expanded with three more census years through 1901. In republishing this piece it was felt that there needed to be an expansion upon the work since the earlier volume had attracted such positive feedback. The first volume identified approximately 2,000 people with close to 4,100 entries. This new edition contains approximately 10,000 entries listing names, sex, relationship to head of household and age. You will find a Table of Contents, new full name index and an expanded Introduction.The new Introduction and study will give you several different situational opinions from numerous historical and cultural experts along with their life experiences while living with the Blackfeet (mostly United States) or Blackfoot (mostly Canada) tribes so you can study the circumstances involved in their world. Also you will find a few suggestions as to where you can search for your family records and read where the sources were located through footnotes. Within the front matter of this book you will find a copy of one of the original treaties (Treaty of Fort Laramie, 1855, or also known as the Treaty of Lame Bull, a Blackfoot chief), covering several Plains tribes. This treaty was to be one of many which would eventually greatly reduce tribal lands over the years. You will not only see copies of the original handwritten treaty but a legible transcription, so you can learn about all parties involved.

Volume III covers from 1934 thru 1939 with many different categories, not just census, birth and death records. You will find at the end of different census years divisions of births and deaths mentioned and then, afterward, there will be an official birth roll and then an official death roll with a cause of death. Additionally you will find record headings such as Additions, Subtractions, Supplemental Rolls, Deduction Rolls, Deaths Unreported, Marriages, Supplemental Census, Live Births, Transfer or Adjustment Roll and Correction in Name Due to Marriage. These censuses were taken by different government agents during a difficult time in our country's history, the Great Depression (1929-1938). Each agent's name will be given with the volume he covered. The records transcribed in this series are from the National Archives film collection M-595, Rolls 25 & 26.?
