This book presents the theory that lies behind the sampling method. Before giving the theory of sample surveys, the mathematical and statistical tools needed to understand the rigorous development of theory are presented along with the kind of work a sampling statistician does in the field. This is to give the reader an insight into the range of problems to which the theory is to be applied. The main features of the treatment of sample survey theory are: Basic schemes of sample selection are presented along with the methods of estimation and the calculation of the precision of the sampling procedure from the sample itself. For achieving higher precision, the reader is carried through the techniques of stratification, ratio and regression estimation, and sampling and subsampling of clusters. Double sampling methods are discussed for both-one time surveys and for surveys repeated over time. How to design the survey and analyze the data when the sample investigation is subject to many types of errors, such as the person selected in the sample is not at home or refuses to answer personal questions; or the person does not possess the information needed; or the interviewer asks the question improperly or records the response incorrectly. Text is interspersed with solved examples that carry the theory beyond the stage reached in the text. Exercises at the end of each chapter with answers in an Appendix.
