Hercules Segers (sometimes spelled Seghers) may be art history's greatest unknown artist. Active in early 17th-century Holland just before Rembrandt, he created otherworldly landscapes of astonishing originality which today are viewed as radical anticipations of modernism. Using an array of innovative techniques that still puzzle scholars (including his famous sugar lift etching method), Segers created extraordinarily resonant, melancholic landscapes characterized by luscious, soft lines, that resemble nothing by his contemporaries and little that has followed since. Segers rejected the notion that prints from a single plate should be identical, instead freely deploying varied color schemes, then adding lines or cutting down the plate and sometimes printing on cloth. Consequently, each print became a unique miniature painting. Poets and artists down through the ages have been fascinated by Segers' poetical art; he strongly influenced Rembrandt, who owned at least eight of his paintings (and one of his printing plates), and more recently, the director Werner Herzog helped revive Segers' name by featuring his prints in his piece for the 2012 Whitney Biennial. Accompanying a major exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, this revelatory two-volume catalogue raisonné (one volume comprised of plates and the other of critical texts) is the most substantial work on the artist ever published, and the first in English since 1978. Beautifully designed by Irma Boom, it contains detailed descriptions of all 18 known paintings and all 184 etchings in full color, most of them at actual size.

Hercules Segers: Painter, Etcher, A Catalogue Raisonn

Presenting a selection of more than 300 photographs from the large and important collection of the Rijksmuseum, New Realities provides an impressive overview of the international development of photography. Major highlights include the earliest travel photos, motion studies by Eadweard Muybridge, advertising photography, portraiture, scenes of everyday life, the earliest photograph taken in Suriname and amazing shots that were made by microscopes and telescopes.
The invention of photography in 1839 led to a revolution in visual culture: photography both portrayed and created the modern world. For the first time, it was possible to depict and unlock every facet of that world. Photography secured a position in every field: in science, the arts, daily life and news reportage. New Realities: Photography in the 19th Century

Matthijs Maris (1839–1917) initially achieved fame as a Hague School landscape painter, like his famous brothers Jacob and Willem. Over the years he abandoned this realistic style for more introverted and symbolic themes, portraying dreamy children, fairytale figures and mythical landscapes using an increasingly smudged painting technique. In his own time, Maris was admired at home and abroad by collectors and artists (including Vincent van Gogh), but despite his success, Maris grew increasingly bitter and spent his last years secluded in his London studio.
This publication, a companion volume to Marthijs Maris at Work, tells the painter’s story through more than 75 paintings, drawings, etchings and pieces of applied art drawn from the collections of the Rijksmuseum and The Burrell Collection in Glasgow, providing the first broad overview of the work of this unjustly forgotten artist.

The Rijksmuseum is celebrating the completed restoration of Rembrandt's magnificent portraits of the exuberantly dressed Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit with a comprehensive publication (and accompanying exhibition) dedicated to life-size portraiture. Over the centuries, powerful monarchs, eccentric aristocrats and rich burghers commissioned portraits of themselves arrayed in all their finery and preferably life-size, from the world's most famous painters. This book presents exceptional life-size portraits by great masters, including Lucas Cranach the Elder, Anthony van Dyck, Frans Hals, Claude Monet, Edvard Munch, Rembrandt and Velázquez. High Society

The 17th-century auricular or lobate style―Kwabstijl, in Dutch―is one of the most important and remarkable Dutch contributions to the decorative arts in Europe.
Soft, smooth, undulating masses that resemble the curvature of the cartilage of the human ear give this curious style its name. Its forms, rendered in delicately hammered silver and gold, are strikingly modern, suspended between human anatomy and the materiality of slugs or mollusks. The "Kwab" of this fascinating book's title refers to the quivering, blubbery mass of animal tissue and aquatic plants.
Kwab: Ornament as Art in the Age of Rembrandt traces the history and meaning of the auricular style, with its fabulous, organic shapes, from the work of the goldsmith Paulus van Vianen at the court of Rudolf II in Prague to that of his brother Adam in Utrecht and Johannes Lutma in Amsterdam. Their masterpieces were admired as high art by Rembrandt and his pupils, who produced auricular designs themselves. The style migrated from silver and goldsmithing to architectural ornament, interior decoration and the decorative arts.
Designed by Irma Boom and written by Reinier Baarsen, Senior Curator of European Furniture at the Rijksmuseum, Kwab tells the fascinating story of this unique abstract decorative form through silver and gold masterworks, design drawings and prints, paintings by Rembrandt, furnishings and Cuir de Cordoue gold leather wall coverings.

By the end of the 19th century, people began to record their daily lives using small, handheld cameras, and photography became increasingly fast, dynamic and accessible. Everyone a Photographer describes the rise of amateur photography in the Netherlands: the photographers, the photographs, the albums and the key figures. At first, amateur photography was mainly a pastime for the wealthy. Quickly, however, young entrepreneurs set out to bring photography to the general public, establishing a booming photo industry.
