The architecture and architectural culture of the Netherlands have been causing quite a stir in recent years: a great many remarkable new buildings and projects testify to the current flowering in Dutch architecture, urban planning, and landscaping that's so exciting to so many in and out of the field. Artificial Landscape illustrates the results of this late twentieth century surge of creativity and traces the background of its success, examining both the 'Dutch phenomenon' and its socio-historical context to find out what makes it work so well. What we find is that even in a period of globalization there is still such a thing as a Dutch 'climate,' yet despite this culture's specific national character we have much to learn from it, particularly where its unique synthesis of architecture, urbanism, and landscaping is concerned. This comprehensive overview of the life and work of J.J.P. Oud is a monumental scholarly achievement and will stand as the definitive statement on the career of one of the pioneers of modern architecture. Oud was an early proponent of the International Modern style, and in 1917 was one of the cofounders, along with Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian, of the Dutch art and architecture movement De Stijl. This book presents, in a clear and accessible manner, an immense body of material, including descriptions, sketches, drawings, and photographs of his projects, realized and unrealized, as well as published articles and Oud's correspondence. His own writings provide valuable insights into his activities, documenting his involvement in De Stijl and the Congres International d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM), his lectures and travels, his participation in exhibitions, and his personal and professional relationships. The introduction is a biography of Oud's life and work, and provides context for the rest of the volume. At over 600 pages, and fully illustrated, this book is by far the most comprehensive ever published on Oud. 
Jacobus Johannes Pieter Oud was born in Purmerend, Holland, in 1890. Educated at the Arts and Crafts School in Amsterdam and at the Technical University in Delft, he worked for Theodor Fischer in Munich before settling in Leiden.~An original member of De Stijl, Oud eventually left the group due to philosophical disagreements. In 1918 he became Municipal Housing Architect for Rotterdam. In 1933 he established his own practice. As a young socialist, Oud stimulated an international and regional trend toward functionalism. He wrote magazine articles, acted as a correspondent for Soviet architectural journals, and contributed a book on Dutch architecture to the Bauhausbucher series. Oud's best-known works are for housing schemes in expanding areas. During and after World War II he became involved in larger commercial projects, but these never achieved the clarity of his early housing. Considered a pioneer of Dutch Functionalist architecture, Oud died in Wassenaar, Holland, in 1963.

For Westerners, there is a distinct cachet attached to building on a rooftop. Maybe its attraction lies in the openness of the space, or in being just that much higher than most, or in the feeling of standing in an open oasis, sometimes unencumbered by walls, but frequently with an enviable view. Strategies of display describes the history of museum presentation within the context of nineteenth- and twentieth-century visual culture. Taking the remarkable display history at the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam as a point of depature, it reflects on the history of presentation in museums in Western Europe and North America. Its numerous illustrations present a parallel history of museum presentation in pictures.Julia Noordegraaf describes how in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries museums communicated with their audiences through their presentations. She argues that museum presentations are based on a 'script' which, like the script of a film, defines a framework of action within which the presentation, its designers and its users interact. This script comprises all the elements that mediate between the museum and its audience. These include the location, architecture and layout of the building, the order and arrangement of the objects, the various display techniques and the different means of communicating with the visitor.This book is unique in its approach to museum presentation as a part of visual culture. Drawing upon ideas developed in film studies, it proceeds from the assumption that the visual media confronting exhibition designers and visitors alike, constitute certain viewing habits that influence the design of museum displays.

The village of Nagele, the Netherlands, is a striking example of postwar construction: A new town built on reclaimed land, it was conceived by architects and designers including Aldo van Eyck, Gerrit Rietveld and Mien Ruys as a home for agricultural workers and their families. But how durable is a community designed in one fell swoop? The photographers Cary Markerink and Theo Baart have been following the changes in Nagele since 1984 and wondering about which factors are important for longer-term success. Their images capture the ways in which a new village has developed during an era of social and economic transformation, adapted or altered to rely on the support of residents old and new. How much can Nagele change without departing from its original design? And, more generally speaking, does establishing new villages contribute to rural life?
