The very existence of London came about because of its bridges. The Romans realized that it was the most convenient place to bridge the Thames estuary, which offers an excellent navigable routeway from the North Sea westwards far into central England, and constructed a series of bridges, which went out of use during the 4th century AD. The great stone bridge lined with houses and shops was constructed c1176-1209, and it became one of the most recognizable visual images of London between the 13th and 17th centuries, one of the most important structures and spaces in medieval and early modern London, rich in historical events, contemporary activities and symbolism. It was home to a thriving residential and working population, but gaining access to the bridge was also vital to the success of protesting crowds and rebel armies. Twice in 1281-2 and 1437, parts of the stone bridge were broken by a combination of ice and neglect. It was demolished in 1831-2 after the construction of a new bridge upstream. This volume is based on the 1984 investigation of the Southwark medieval bridge abutment and combines the archaeological, architectural, historical and pictorial evidence for London's greatest bridge. The scene of battles and pageants, London Bridge was also where the 'keep left' on the road rule began in 1722.

Tin-glazed or 'delftware' manufacture began in London at Aldgate (from c.1750), and ceased at Glasshouse Street in Lambeth in 1846. In the decades following the closure of the Aldgate pothouse in c.1615 or c.1620 tin-glazed ware manufacturies opened in London with increasing frequency, and with a strong presence south of the River Thames. This publication combines documentary evidence with that from archaeological interventions (1979-92) at five tin-glazed ware production sites on the south bank of the Thames - the Montague Close, Pickleherring and Rotherhithe pothouses in Southwark, and the Norfolk House and Glasshouse Street pothouses in Lambeth - and discusses the tin-glazed pottery industries of Southwark and Lambeth in a wider context. The East Smithfield Black Death cemetery was excavated in 1986-8 as part of the Royal Mint site. Founded in 1348/9, it was one of two emergency burial grounds established when the Black Death came to London. The work reported here represents the only large-scale excavation and post-excavation analysis of a proven Black Death cemetery in this country and is indisputably of international importance in terms of its archaeology and the human bone assemblage derived from the c.759 burials found. Two distinct burial areas were established, both using a combination of well-ordered individual graves and mass burial trenches. The burial practices and the human bone assemblage are analysed and discussed in relation to Black Death studies in London and elsewhere. The impact of the plague on medieval London and the importance of this cemetery, and that at West Smithfield, in the city's attempts to cope with the disaster are both assessed. The earlier history of the site and the influence of the Black Death cemetery on the subsequent use of the site are also examined, particularly its effect on the later foundation and layout of the Cistercian abbey of St Mary Graces.
