Auftragstaktik grants commanders at all levels a maximum of freedom of action. The other services also command and control on this bases. In the armed forces of Germany´s allies, the beginnings of Auftragstaktik are recognizable. Many allied armed forces have tried to introduce Auftragstaktik based on the German experience and adopted it to their specific military cultures. Misinterpretation and misunderstanding, however, very often accompanied this attempt and process, and the intent to use Auftragstaktik very often degenerated to a lip service. Lieutenant Colonel Wittmann identifies a broad variety of definitions of Auftragstaktik in his literature analysis. Since Auftragstaktik lacks from theoretical foundation, he tries to ground it theoretically in an interesting and convincing manner. His work has, undoubtedly, extraordinary relevance to the present and future dimensions of leadership in the multinational structured armed forces of today, but also in areas outside of the military sphere.

In 2010, German soldiers in Afghanistan were involved in the heaviest fighting since the establishment of the Bundeswehr. After eight months of preparation for operations, our 2nd Company, 92 Mechanized Infantry Training Battalion, was the first unit of Task Force Kunduz III to be deployed completely to Afghanistan, and only a few days after its arrival started to patrol the troubled district of Chahar Darreh.

Im vorliegenden Buch untersucht Lisec als pensionierter Offizier das Verhalten bzw. die Beteiligung deutscher Offiziere im Rahmen des Völkermords an den Armeniern im 1. Weltkrieg und geht dabei auch auf Ereignisse vor und nach diesem Krieg ein. Im Kern geht es dem Autor um Grenzen des soldatischen Gehorsams, einerseits gegenüber dem eigenen Dienstherrn, andererseits gegenüber Vorgesetzten beim Dienste in einer fremden Armee oder einer Koalitionsarmee mit überwiegend osmanisch-deutschen Anteilen. Es stellte sich damit das Problem Diener zweier Herren zu sein. Während noch zur Zeit von Moltke 1839 seine Berichte über Grausamkeiten und Teilnahme in einem Bürgerkrieg im Osmanischen Reich in der deutschen Bevölkerung keine Reaktionen hervorriefen, änderte sich dies vor und nach der Jahrhundertwende bei Ausschreitungen unter dem Sultan Abdülhamid II bzw. nachfolgend unter den Jungtürken gegenüber der eigenen Bevölkerung, speziell den Armeniern. Seitdem wurde die Weltöffentlichkeit zunehmend sensibilisiert, wie das heutige Beispiel Syrien zeigt. Lisec hat, bei leider lückenhafter Dokumentenlage, langjährige Recherchen in vier Sprachen getätigt. Gegenüber den spärlichen bisherigen Veröffentlichungen zu dem eingegrenzten Thema hat Lisec den betrachteten Personenkreis soweit möglich erweitert, einige Irrtümer richtig gestellt, die militärische Spitzengliederung in Istanbul ergänzt und die damit verbundenen Kompetenzen der Befehlsgebung erläutert. Das Verhalten jedes Offiziers ist gesondert zu betrachten, daher verzichtet Lisec auf eine zusammenfassende Bewertung, die Licht und Schatten beinhalten würde. Er überlässt diese dem Leser.
