Born in Australia and educated in the UK, Dr. Alan McComas has spent most of his working life in Canada, where he was the first Head of Neurology and the founding Chair of Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario. An ardent neurophysiologist, his research has spanned many topics including muscle development, nerve and muscle regeneration after injury, muscle fatigue, again, muscle reflexes and touch sensation. He is, however, best known for having devised a simple electrophysiological method for estimating the number of nerve fibers supplying individual himan muscles. The co-author of 6 books and 170 peer-reviewed chapters and journal articles, he regards The Artful Chameleon as his most significant publication to date.Set within the context of the author's life and work, The Artful Chameleon is an extraordinary story. Migraine is shown to be a far more complex disorder than commonly supposed, and its symptoms to clearly result from overactivity of specific areas of the cerebral cortex.
