Delayed Justice

Colonel Swenson, a commanding officer in the 8th Air Force, is a dominating figure. A true wartime hero, he is nevertheless despised by many soldiers in his command. As an autocrat who wields immense and unwarranted power, he so alienates some of his charges that at least a dozen men swear to "get him" one way or another. The story of his heartlessness in fascinating, culminated by his ordering American airmen, who were prisoners of war, to embark on a death cruise down the Danube under the aegis of the Waffen SS. From the skies over wartime Europe to the colonel's successful business career, his primary antagonist is Rod Drayton, whose great friend, Lenny, dies because of the colonel's perfidy. As he lays dying in Rod's arms, Lenny elicits a promise from Rod that his death will be avenged. How, and by whom, makes for an intriguing suspense novel that moves quickly to a surprise climax. Surrounding the two main characters are Maggie, the beautiful English war! bride, who pays an awful price for her attractiveness, and Pat Decker, whose actions sometimes belie the fact that he is Rod's best friend.
