Born in Sinaloa, Mexico, Julia Pastrana (1834–1860) was a gifted singer, musician and dancer who could converse in English, Spanish and French. She also suffered from one of the most extreme cases of hypertrichosis terminalis on record and severe gingival hyperplasia: her face and body were covered with thick hair and her jaw was disproportionately large. Pastrana toured North America and Europe billed as “The Ugliest Woman in the World.” After her death, her body was exhibited throughout Europe and the US. Until her recent repatriation to Sinaloa, her body was kept at the University of Oslo, Norway. Pastrana’s story raises issues around beauty, ownership, science and racism, human rights, colonialism, sexism and indigenous rights. Artist Laura Anderson Barbata has brought together scholars and experts from various fields to explore these and other topics as they relate to Pastrana’s extraordinary story.

Arthur Dove: A Reassessment offers a fresh look at the art, life and literature of seminal American modernist painter Arthur Dove (1880–1946). A Living Work of Art: The Norton Simon Museum Sculpture Garden tells the fascinating story of the evolution of the Museum property into the lush and inspiring garden it is today. After a rich history as a California landmark and art institution, the Museum and garden underwent a major renovation in the late 1990s under the direction of architect Frank Gehry. As part of the Museum's renovation, landscape designer Nancy Goslee Power reimagined the property, transforming it into a verdant park inspired by Monet's garden at Giverny. The spectacular pond and year-round palette of color delight visitors, as do the monumental sculptures that greet visitors at the entrance, and then surprise those exploring the meandering paths in the main garden: works by Aristide Maillol, Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Robert Rauschenberg, and others. <ul><li>Examines the life and work of Marie Spartali Stillman, an underrepresented artist of the British Pre-Raphaelite circle</li></ul>Marie Spartali Stillman (1844-1927) was one of a small number of professional female artists working in the second half of the nineteenth century. She was an important presence in the Victorian art world and closely affiliated with members of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, modeling for George Frederic Watts, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Edward Burne-Jones, among others. Desiring an artistic career of her own, she trained with Ford Madox Brown. After marrying the American painter and journalist William James Stillman, she lived in Italy, where she was deeply influenced by Renaissance art. This fully-illustrated catalogue provides the opportunity to examine approximately fifty of her works, many of which reside in private collections and have not been shown since Spartali Stillman's lifetime. Three essays and individual entries for each of the featured works focus on Spartali Stillman's biography and creative output. Jan Marsh is a freelance biographer, cultural historian, and exhibition curator specialising in Victorian art. Dr. Margaretta Frederick is the Chief Curator and Curator of the Samuel and Mary R. Bancroft Collection of Pre-Raphaelite Art at the Delaware Art Museum.

Guatemalan-born sculptor Darío Escobar (born 1971) is a contemporary master of the kind of aesthetic object that also doubles as a revealing critique of globalization. Since the late 1990s he has mobilized armies of everyday industrial and consumer products--McDonald’s cups, cereal boxes, vulcanized rubber, car bumpers and sports equipment of various types--in order to construct an ongoing dialogue with the reality of global consumerism. That dialogue, invariably, has also incorporated an extensive dialogue with modern and contemporary art. This book covers two decades of this singular artist’s work, while highlighting profound insights into the nature of found objects, commodity culture and contemporary art’s increasing identification with the myths and realities of globalization.

Darío Escobar: The Life of the Object

•This book dives into the details of the impressive series of paintings known as "Jacob and His Twelve Sons" by seventeenth-century master Francisco de Zurbarán The impressive series of paintings known as "Jacob and His Twelve Sons" portrays thirteen larger-than-life-size figures by Spanish master Francisco de Zurbarán (1598-1664). Painted between 1640 and 1644, the series depicts chapter 49 of the Book of Genesis and the moment of Jacob's deathbed blessings to his sons, each of whom would go on to found the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Brought to England in the eighteenth century, the works form part of the Auckland Castle Trust, which today holds one of the most significant public collections of the artist's work outside Spain. Since 2016, "Jacob and His Twelve Sons" has been on extended loan in order to undergo a complete technical study. The works are being examined with infrared reflectography, ultra-violet light, and x-radiography, and will undergo medium and pigment analysis to help shed light on the artistic construction of the series. This publication will chronicle the scientific analysis and also provide focused art historical studies of the works. Essays will cover the iconography of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, the history of the canvases, and Zurbarán's artistic practices and visual sources. With this comprehensive and varied approach, the book will constitute the most extensive contribution to the scholarship on one of the most ambitious series by this Golden Age master. Michael C. Spafford, one of the most respected and admired painters in the Northwest, has created a cohesive body of work of rare intelligence and power. Now professor emeritus at the University of Washington School of Art, he began teaching in 1963 and was an influential and provocative teacher. Spafford remains an active painter who has never shied away from bold, often brutal universal themes. The rigorous physicality and formal invention inherent in his work enhance the viewer's visual understanding as well as the potency of the image. Widely exhibited, awarded, and collected, Spafford is best known for his fascination with myths of origin and heroic endeavor.
