The Regis University collection of New Mexican Santos is the largest teaching collection of santos in the United States. Documenting some 300 pieces of Spanish colonial and contemporary devotional art, this book also tells the story of the acquisition of the santos, beginning with the authors purchase of an old painting for $10 when he was still a student. This unique collection includes the work of master santeros from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as well as contemporary masters such as Charlie Carrillo and Max Roybal. In addition to painted and carved saints, the Regis collection includes milagros, crosses, candelabra, and handkerchief art.

The Regis University Collection of New Mexican Santos is the largest teaching collection of santos in the United States. This book documents three hundred pieces of Spanish Colonial and contemporary devotional art that have been assembled by Father Thomas Steele over thirty years. This is the first time an entire collection of New Mexican santos has been documented for the general public. Although the book tells the stories behind the acquisition of the santos over a thirty year period, the tradition and images cover almost four hundred years of New Mexican history. The collection contains examples of the master santeros from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as well as contemporary masters like Charlie Carrillo, Felix Lopez, Max Roybal, Gustavo Victor Goler, Alcario Otero, Arlene Cisneros Sena, Frank Brito, Jimmy Trujillo and David Nabor Lucero.

The importance of religion in New Mexico is manifest in this collection of essays, the proceedings of a 1997 symposium that represents the work of twenty-three of the region's most noted scholars and writers. Among the topics they cover are church architecture, the role of missionaries in colonization, the role of the church in education, the contributions of the Penitentes, and the work of specific orders, particularly the Jesuits and the Franciscans. Local devotion to such figures as St. Michael, La Guadalupana, La Conquistadora, and Nuestra Seora de Beln is addressed in several essays, as well as the work of such historic leaders as Padre Martnez and Archbishop Lamy. In addition to its importance for historians, this book will be of interest to genealogists. It includes an essay on sacramental records and the preservation of New Mexico family genealogies from the colonial era to the present.

Frank Applegate of Santa Fe: Artist and Preservationist

Frank Applegate was a well-established artist on the East Coast when he moved to Santa Fe in 1921. He was immediately drawn into the art of the Native American and Hispanic cultures and became a moving force in the Santa Fe art scene. Applegate, along with Mary Austin, founded the Spanish Colonial Arts Society whose 75th anniversary is July 2001. 
Applegate was known for his watercolors, oil paintings, ceramics, and santos. This thoughtful and concise biography is written by Applegate’s great-nephew and his wife who had access to family papers and to photographs by Ansel Adams.
