BLACKBERRY MEMORIES\nThis book’s title is the culmination of years of writing about a little girl born into poverty and surviving the hot summertime in the Mississippi Delta. It is about living through the winters of desperation and despair and coming out of it unscathed to be a strong, resilient woman of the times. It is a story of faith and hope. It is the story of trials and tribulations. It is a story of coming of age at a time when women, and Black people in particular, were just beginning to make strides in attaining recognition for their rightful place in American society. This is about the people who gave me a basic understanding of life by demonstrating kindness, courage and confidence, giving to others without expecting anything in return. It is about struggle, family and being surrounded by people who love you. It is about faith, foundation and favor.\nThe survival skills I have employed in the years that God has blessed me to be on this earth began one cold, bleak winter, back in 1956 (one of my earliest recollections of being poor). There is no way to fully describe to someone what it feels like to be cold but to actually be cold. There is no way to describe how it feels to be thirsty and without water to drink but to be out in the mercilessly hot Delta sun and not have water to drink. No one understands what it is like not to have shelter over your head, unless you have experienced the agony of coming home to find your house burned to the ground and now, you have nowhere to live. 
For years, I was unable to write this manuscript. Each time I attempted to do so, my heart-breaking emotions were so intense that I found myself incapable of continuing without shedding painful tears, forcing me to stop for a time. Perhaps the tears were for my ancestors or for my parents or grandparents whom I love dearly. Or perhaps they were for myself having undergone such a metamorphosis of soul, of spirit, of my every being. I recognize that we cannot really enjoy the present or future fully unless we reflect and know unabashedly where we have been and/or for remembering those souls who have helped and influenced us along the way.\nIt is not unusual for me to run into persons who think that because I have attained a certain level of success in my life, I have always had all the tools and requirements needed to excel. They seem surprised when I tell them it is only through constant prayer and a great deal of challenges that I have survived overwhelming obstacles in climbing the “mountains of life.”\nWhy the title, BLACKBERRY MEMORIES? Somehow or another, it stands out that time in my life when my family survived by eating frozen blackberries for breakfast, lunch and dinner for an entire week. I can remember those blackberries were delicious! Especially when we considered the alternative - extreme hunger. With this in mind, I want to share my experiences with others as they climb their “mountains of life,” as they fight lack, racism, bias and hunger. About the AuthorPastor H. Rodney Hurst was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the eldest of four children. He is a faithful and devoted husband of one wife, Evangelist Connie Hurst. He is a faithful and committed father. Pastor Hurst is a preacher of Holiness and a student of the word Pastor Hurst served as part of the Central Holiness Church of Deliverance of Atlanta for most of his life. He served in many capacities as a member of the Mass Choir, Male Chorus, and several other auxiliaries. He has always loved to sing and praise God. He is known for 10 years of service and dedication as an ordained Deacon. His love for God’s people is demonstrated not only within the church, but outside of the church as he faithfully serves in his community. It was during his service at Central Holiness Church of Deliverance that he discerned and answered his call to minister. Pastor Hurst was called to serve as an associate minister in 2012. Under the leadership of the late Founder, Visionary and Pastor of Central Holiness Church Apostle J. T. Barnett and First Lady Blondine Barnett. As an Associate Minister, he oversaw the Pastoral Care Ministry (armor bearer) which included working with other ministries and tending to frequently called upon needs to assist Chief Apostle Barnett. Pastor Hurst also gave strength and support to the full Pastoral leadership team of Central 
Holiness. Pastor Hurst was able to consistently and willingly be in place to be an aid to Chief Apostle Barnett and continues to be in place to aid others in positions of leadership. He is a community minister working both within and beyond “the walls” to nurture and meet the needs of God’s people. The most remarkable memories for Pastor Hurst were times that he 
spent traveling with Chief Apostle Barnett in and out of the city and to various parts of the United States – fasting, praying, serving, preaching and proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Pastor Hurst has a passion for people, love for visiting the sick and shut-in, and working in the ministry. In his own words, “my desire is to do nothing less than to please God, and to spread the message of love and truth to the world. Not just to talk it, but live it!” On November 30, 2014, Pastor Hurst received his Certificate of Ordination as was solemnly and publicly set apart and ordained to the work of the Gospel Ministry an Elder by authority and order. In July 2015 Pastor Hurst was called to leadership and installed as the Pastor of the Temple of Hope Non-Denominational Church in Atlanta’s Historic Pittsburgh Community. A great teacher and orator, 
Pastor Hurst set the vision for the Temple of Hope to see the ministry flourish, to build strong men and women in service and in ministry of the Gospel. 
In May 2016, Pastor Hurst launched a new endeavor as God’s divine assignment and Founded Cornerstone Ministries Inc... With a sincere desire to administer the church according to the Word of God. Pastor Hurst’s ministry is best accurately described in Isaiah Chapter 61 1-2. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek, he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of 
the prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Richard Evans, a writer born in New York City and raised in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn was drawn to music at an early age. After becoming a DJ he later on became a lyricist and hip hop music producer. He realized that today's youth were lacking positive messages and images that they can actually relate to and feel good about. After some years, Richard met up with Dale Wilburg who was not a stranger to writing himself and in 2008 they teamed up to form the RichDale Inc. In order to combine vast ideas, they created a wonderful children's book series for youngsters of different ages. After reading their stories to children in various after school programs they would get an authentic response and the feedback was out of this world! Rich and Dale supplemented their children's book series as one of the latest writing teams which incorporates reading rhythm with an innovative, colorful style. So, the idea was to create a series of characters to transform the way kids build a positive self-image. About The Strength of a WomanDuring the late 90’s and early 2000’s, Aretha Duncan was an outreach Community Health Network of Connecticut. During these years, she also made many contributions to the community both domestically and internationally outside of Social Service role. She is the Founding member of Windsor Rovers Soccer Club Whose mission is to support inner city youths through community organization, providing support to single parents by teaching the importance of physical fitness and proper nutrition in Hartford, CT. Aretha was awarded “Leader of the Year” in 1998. She is also the founding member of Human Capital International that champions humanitarian aid to Africa, in particular Nigeria. Has provided medical care to 6,780 Nigerians utilizing the service of 42 doctors and other medical professionals from National Youth Service Corps. Water wells were dug in villages so that people could have access to safe drinking water. Her efforts have been recognized by President Obasanjo of Nigeria , and was featured on several news publications, including the Hartford Courant. Attended A Round Table on President Bush’s Administration Policy and U.S./Africa Trade and the HIV/AIDS Pandemic in Africa” attendees included, Ambassador Jabril Aminu of Nigeria, Ambassador Yusuf Nzibo of Kenya, Rosa Whitaker, assistant U.S. trade representative for Africa, Dr. Jendayi Frazier, director for Africa at the National Security Council, Adam Taylor of the Harvard AIDS Institute, and Silih Booke, Director of the African Policy Information Center. 
While spending time in Africa and Caribbean, Aretha collaborated with many indigenous groups. These groups introduced and educated her on the properties and benefits gained from natural herbs which they have used for centuries. For several years afterwards, she studied and researched various medicinal herbs that focused on boosting energy, improving concentration, and enhancing drive. Eventually she developed a special blend of herbs which became, “Champion Gorilla”. The Book..One of my earliest recollections of my grandfather is that he was a coffee farmer. The farm area where the coffee trees are grown is always dark due to the large Ackee and Guango trees and thick clusters of coffee trees not to mention the mosquitoes, especially during the rainy season, which is from September to November. The coffee trees are tall and slender, with many small branches on which the coffee berries are grown. The trees are harvested once a year and twice per month. My grandfather would gather all the older children from the community and able-bodied family members to assist with harvesting the coffee berries...
