Volume one and two of The Lanchester Legacy, by Chris Clark, deal with the famous Lanchester cars. Volume three includes biographies of the three Lanchester brothers, but is mainly devoted to the non-car research and interests of Dr. Frederick William Lanchester, and reviews and evaluates their importance.  Fred Lanchester was one of the first engineers to evolve a theory of flight, and there are chapters on aerodynamics and the use of aircraft in warfare. He devised a mathematical theory of military strategy, the N-Square Law, which is the foundation stone of operations research. This has been developed in Japan as a business marketing strategy, and one of its leading exponents writes for the first time in English on its applications.  Lanchester wrote on optics, building construction and many engineering firsts; he published books on the theory of dimensions, the musical scale, and several volumes of poetry; they are all reviewed here.  He applied for over 400 patents, 236 of which were granted; they are all listed. There is also a bibliography of all Lanchester known publications, reports and contributions to the discussions at engineering institutions' meetings, and a guide to the sources of Lanchester documents open to the public.
