Over a period of three years Tadanori Yokoo has set out with a camera to visit the 23 wards, suburbs and islands of Tokyo in search of Y-junctions. Having previously only painted them this astonishing book follows his Y-junctions search through the city and his struggle to picture them. Every nook and cranny of the city of Tokyo is filled with people. His refusal to have any of them appear on the images implied he had to wait patiently for all persons to disappear which sometimes could take quite a while: he refused to artificially erase them with a computer. There are 235 Y-junctions in this curious book and most of the pictures are taken at night. All photographs are in colour. Includes an essay on the origins of the Y-junction by art critic Noi Sawaragi and an afterward by Yokoo himself.

Tadanori Yokoo is one of Japan's most prolific and internationally recognised graphic designers and artists, whose body of work also includes illustration, printmaking, painting and collage. The pages of this book are filled with almost 100 clipped and pasted compositions spanning 40 years of work, many of them recent and new pieces. As described by Hideo Namba in the accompanying critical essay, Yokoos art is the act of freely creating a work on the basis of intuition and (human) instinct. Striking a strangely convincing balance between the natural and unnatural, his juxtapositions and commentary of popular culture pose solutions to contradictory themes.

Japanese graphic designer, illustrator, printmaker, and painter Tadanori Yokoo achieved international recognition for his work during the 1960s. His great interest in psychedelia, mysticism, and the pop culture of the time led him to produce brightly coloured, intensely autobiographical works using complex, multi-layered imagery, but also posters for events by leading figures of the counterculture movement in Japan, like Tatsumi Hijikata, Juro Kara, and Shuji Terayama, that reflect a keen painterly expression.
