The High School of Glasgow has a long and distinguished history. Its origins in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries as the Sang School and Grammar School are obscure, but it considerably predates the University of Glasgow founded in the mid-fifteenth century. As early as 1600 the Glasgow Town Council proclaimed its pride in their burgh school, and its building in Grammar School Wynd was rebuilt. In the centuries which followed, the Grammar School played a central part in the education of Glasgow's most prominent citizens, including two twentieth-century Prime Ministers: Henry Campbell-Bannerman and Andrew Bonar Law. They attended the School post-1834 when the School's curriculum was broadened to cater for the growing commercial nature of the town and its name became The High School of Glasgow. In 1878 the School moved to Elmbank Street into accommodation fit for the leading school in Glasgow, and the City Fathers then founded a parallel institution for girls at Garnethill. As fee-paying, selective schools they dominated the Corporation sector until the dramatic events of the 1970s when The High School of Glasgow was closed and The Glasgow High School for Girls was converted into a local comprehensive.  This book charts the history of these schools and the story of how a new co-educational independent High School was opened on the playing fields of Old Anniesland and, within a generation, it has become one of the top schools in Scotland.

Galloglas were mercenary warriors from the Hebrides and West Highlands who settled in Ireland in the later thirteenth century and achieved an extraordinary prominence on Irish battlefields throughout the following three hundred years. Fighting as heavy infantry - highly disciplined, mail-armoured and wielding their characteristic weapon of the long-staved war-axe - they were the decisive military component in the Gaelic Irish resurgence of the fourteenth century and represented the cutting-edge of resistance to Tudor reconquest two hundred years later. Found first in the service of native Irish lords in Ulster and Connacht, they were later brought into Muster and Leinster by the gaelicised Anglo-Irish earls. By the fifteenth century they were established as Ireland's first professional warrior class and, like other professional classes in the Gaelic world, they were organised on the basis of kin-group. The names of hereditary commanders of galloglas entered in the Irish annals identify these mercenary warrior kindreds as the MacCabes, MacDonnells, MacDowells, MacRorys, MacSheehys and MacSweeneys, all of them families descended from the Gaelic-Norse aristocracy of Argyll and the Isles - and yet their story has been called 'a forgotten chapter of West Highland history'. This account of the galloglas is written from a decidedly Scottish perspective, tracing the origins of the six kindreds and investigating the circumstances which brought about their relocation to Ireland. It goes on to examine the galloglas as warriors, pointing to their distinctly Norse character and proposing their battle-fury as 'the last unmistakable echo of the Scandinavian impact on the Celtic west'.

In 1637 Scotland exploded in rebellion against King Charles I. The rebellion sought not only to undo hated anglicising policies in the Church, but to reverse the wholesale transfer of power to London which had followed the 1603 Union of the Crowns. The Covenanters fought for a Scottish parliament free from royal control as well as for a Presbyterian Church. Their success was staggering. When the king refused to make concessions they widened their demands, and when he planned to conquer Scotland with armies from England and Ireland, they occupied the north of England with their own army and even forced the humiliated king to pay for it. The Covenanters had triumphed, but the triumph proved fragile, as their success destabilised Charles I's other two kingdoms. The Scots had proved how brittle the seemingly absolute monarchy really was. First the Irish followed the Scottish army and revolted, then in 1642 England collapsed into civil war. How were the Covenanters to react? In the three-kingdom monarchy, Scotland's fate would depend on the outcomes of the Irish and English wars. It was decided that Scotland's national interests - and doing God's will - made it necessary to send armies to intervene in both Ireland and England to enforce a settlement on all three kingdoms that would protect Scotland's separate identity and impose Scottish Presbyterianism on all of them. As the Covenanters launched an invasion of England in 1644 their hopes were high.
