Here, and now back in print, is the History of the Orphan Brigade, one of the first Civil War histories originally completed after the close of hostilities. The History of the First Kentucky Brigade, written by Ed Porter Thompson, was a massive undertaking, which began in November 1864, during the final winter of the War, and concluded with the first printing in 1868. In 1898, Thompson revised, updated, and renamed the book History of the Orphan Brigade, resulting in this enormous work of 1,004 pages, plus 76 illustrations. 
Considered the definitive history of this famous brigade, it provides a thorough background on the formation, staffing, component units, battles, and leadership throughout the War. It takes you from the Kentucky parade grounds in the summer of 1861, to the recruitment and training camps on the Tennessee border, and through the battles at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, Stones River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, and Atlanta. Thompson develops a wonderful history of the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 9th Kentucky Infantry Regiments, as well as detailed accounts of Artillery, Cavalry and other brigade units. 
Thompson had been with the brigade from the beginning, enlisting as a private, promoting to first-sergeant, and, eventually, to Captain. He was a thoughtful man, well read, knowledgeable and convinced of the special place in history that would be bestowed on his Orphan Brigade. His participation in most of the battles, in either a line or staff position, and his access to the brigade records and papers, led to one of the most accurate Civil War unit histories written. William C. Davis, in his book, The Orphan Brigade: The Kentucky Confederates Who Couldn t Go Home, and author or editor of more than 30 books on the Civil War and southern history, writes, Thompson s efforts were ...monumental works, and in the main far more accurate than most Civil War unit histories, thanks to a thorough grounding in the brigade s official papers. 
Ed Porter Thompson believed that ...no history of the command would be adequate that did not take cognizance of all the individuals whose conduct helped to make the fame of the organization, and this belief was one of his guiding principles in preparing his manuscript. To that end, more than half of the pages are devoted to this endeavor. The personnel section of the book is organized into unit rosters, with individuals listed under their assigned units. There are numerous photographs and engravings of many of the officers, as well as biographical information on officers and men in the ranks, making this book an exceptional memorial to the brigade s individual members.

JOHN DUNN, Logan County, was one of the corporals of the company, and took part in nearly all the battles. He was wounded at Chickamauga and Peachtree Creek, and was killed at Jonesboro. 
GEO. B. DODD, Allen County, fought with Co. H, Third Arkansas Infantry, during the first two years of the war; was transferred to the Sixth Kentucky, Jan. 13, 1863, and fought with it at Jackson, Chickamauga, Rocky Face Gap, Resaca, and Dallas; was severely wounded at the latter place, and disabled for further service during the war. 
PEYTON B. BYRNE, Greenup County, was an old man, but took part in most of the battles of his company. 
These pages include information on thousands of individual Brigade members, as well as a thorough history of the Orphan Brigade. This book is a wonderful resource for any Civil War buff or genealogist researching Kentucky.

In 1901, Oscar Kuhns completed and published his work on the so-called "Pennsylvania Dutch," which documents their history, immigration, and lifestyle up to the Revolutionary War and beyond. This scholarly classic is considered an authoritative reference for these settlers during this period of American history, and is cited in the Harvard Guide to American History. For any researcher focusing on Pennsylvania or this group of emigrants, this book is an invaluable resource. In 268 pages, Professor Kunhs defines and describes the historical context in Europe leading up to the early Swiss German immigration, the settling of the German Counties of Pennstlvania, their manners and customs, language, literature, education, superstitions and religious life. The author devotes an entire chapter discussing the emigrants' attitudes and contributions in the development of Pennsylvania in particular, and the United States in general, as well as political and military participation at both the state and national level. Professor Kuhns' scholarly effort has resulted in a book that has been used for over 100 years as a primary research source for the "Pennsylvania Dutch." Using many of the tools of his profession, the book contains numerous footnotes, an extensive bibliography, an index, as well as an appendix, which is an excellent guide in acquiring knowledge of German family names, their source, development, and English equivalents during the colonial period.

This book contains a detailed history of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, which traces its early settlement, growth, and development, as well as many of the individuals responsible for the County's progress. The author did not restrict her documentation to only current county boundaries, but also addressed the people of Southern Piedmont Virginia, that is, of Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Patrick, Franklin, Bedford and Campbell Counties. The book is a wonderful genealogical repository of over 5,000 individuals partly responsible for the growth and development of Pittsylvania County. Also prominent are numerous lists---many including inclusive dates---gleaned from records and other source material. This book, originally published without index, now contains a New All-Name Index, making it much easier for the reader to locate ancestors or persons of interest. Mr. Hale, in detailing his objective in undertaking this work, writes, "In connection with, and following these histories of the Ingles and Draper settlements and families, I shall endeavor to trace, in chronological order, the progressive frontier explorations and settlements along the entire Virginia border, from the Alleghenies to the Ohio, from the New River-Kanawha and tributaries in the South-west, where settlements first began, to the Monongahela and tributaries, in the North-west, and the intervening country, and along the Ohio, where the frontier line of settlements was last to be advanced, but I shall give more special attention to the early history of the region of the New River-Kanawha and tributaries, with collateral facts and incidents of more or less local or general historical interest." This area of New River-Kanawha is located in present-day Montgomery and Pulaski counties of Virginia. The author manages to not only follow significant historical events of the time, but he also develops and documents the lives and adventures of many of the individuals and families (primarily the Ingles and Drapers) inhabiting the territory. John Filson's, "The Discovery, Settlement and Present State of Kentucky: And an Essay Towards the Topography, and Natural History of that Important Country: To Which is Added, an Appendix, Containing The Adventures of Col. Daniel Boone, One of the first Settlers, comprehending every important Occurrence in the political History of that Province ...", published in 1784, is the first descriptive account of Kentucky and the first narrative of Daniel Boone. The book was immensely popular and was translated into French and German numerous times, with a Paris edition appearing in 1785. Topics addressed include Kentucky's discovery and purchase, as well as boundaries, topography and terrain, climate, rivers, soil, inhabitants, rights of land, and trade. The 32-page Appendix, outlining the "Adventures of Col. Daniel Boon; containing a narrative of the Wars of Kentucke," is the first known narrative of Daniel Boone, and the portion of the book believed to be most responsible for drawing so much attention to the work. The Appendix also contains, "The Minutes of the Piankashaw council held in 1784;" "An Account of the Indian Nations inhabiting within the Limits of the Thirteen United States, their Manners and Customs, and Reflections on their Origin;" and "The Stages and Distances between Philadelphia and the Falls of the Ohio," as well as other geographical topics. Included is a drawing of Daniel Boone and a Map of Kentucky, which was drawn by Filson, and was the best, up to that time, for the topography of Kentucky country.
