Hans Egede's remarkable 1770-1778 journals were first published in 1818 when the British launched their great nineteenth-century Arctic explorations and such information was in enormous demand. The coast of eastern Greenland had been virtually inaccessible to Europeans for four centuries. Egede's fascinating writings relate his determined quest for remnants of old settlements, keen observations of the Greenlandic Inuit on subjects as varied as polygamy, witchcraft, health, education, how the Inuit's contact with outsiders affected this indigenous people, and previously little-known information about the geography of the island's eastern territories. After years of being out-of-print, Egede's colorful accounts are once again made available to English-speaking readers in this wonderful and timely new series, launched just as the eyes of the world are, not a moment too soon, drawn northward.

Native languages and ways of living, including the arts of sea kayaking and dog sledding, fascinated Knud Rasmussen, himself of Inuit and Danish descent. Rasmussen devoted much of his life to ethnological and cultural studies throughout Arctic North America. Establishing a base station in Thule, Greenland, in 1910, he visited as many Inuit peoples as he could, taking meticulous notes and making sketches, collecting artifacts and compiling hundreds of Native legends and songs. The tales are grounded in the Inuit belief system, itself defined by superstition and transformation. Thanks to his own mixed heritage, Rasmussen understood Inuit stories at a deeper level than did most observers, and documented many priceless legends that the West might have otherwise not have noticed. From his Thule station, Rasmussen led many ambitious Arctic expeditions. His famous Great Sledge Journey resulted in this priceless and beloved collection and descriptions of Inuit folktales, songs, and poetry, now finally back in print in English.

First published in English in 1918 by the American Museum of Natural History in its series of Anthropological Papers, the stories told here in Tales of Yukaghir were collected among Russianized natives of Eastern Siberia at the end of the nineteenth-century while Bogaras was exiled into North-Eastern Siberia for revolutionary activities. These tales tell of kings, young heroes on horseback, and adventurous animals with varied powers, relating details of native life that clearly show their Russian or Turko-Mongol provenance. Recorded here, long before the environmental and political effects of the later parts of the twentieth century, are the recollections of the people of Nunavik in their own words. This is the first volume of a ten-volume series collecting articles from periodicals published by Makivik Corporation, beginning in 1974 with Taqralik Magazine and continuing through the current Makivik Magazine. This volume presents, in stories and tales, a unique glimpse into the authentic experience of a world in change, yet still in touch with its own traditions.  The Makivik Corporation is the legal representative of Quebec's Inuit people, established in 1978 under the terms of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement. The Makivik Corporation is empowered to negotiate new agreements with governments on behalf of the Quebec Inuit and to represent them. Makivik promotes the preservation of Inuit culture and language, as well as the health, welfare, education, and relief of poverty for Inuit in their communities.

Voices and Images of Nunavimmiut: Volume I - Stories and Tales

Traced here are the beginnings of literacy and literature for Inuit living in Labrador and the eastern Canadian arctic. Inuit living in Labrador in the 19th and early 20th centuries were more literate than white settlers as a direct result of the Moravian missionaries who taught them to read and write in Inuktitut in the mission schools. Many of the original Inuktitut texts used by the mission teachers and students are included as part of this exhibition.The Labrador Inuit are the first Canadian Inuit to have their own language. Their first texts took the form of songs or narratives. The Meaning of Ice: People and Sea Ice in Three Arctic Communities

This collection of transcribed stories from the Thule region of northern Greenland, begun in 1935, represents stories told to the editor by 5 different Inuit. Holtved recorded these on long playing records along with songs and chants, providing a rich and accurate portrayal of the people and their culture. Multiple versions of the same story are included here, providing greater clarity into the individual storyteller and their own motives.
