From the Fire: Contemporary Korean Ceramics is a compelling exhibition that brings the finest of contemporary Korean ceramics in the largest survey of works to come to North America. The exhibition also marks the first time a Korean curator has selected an exhibition of contemporary ceramics from Korea for tour in United States. This exhibition assembles 54 contemporary Korean ceramic artists whose pieces incorporate traditional techniques with new influences and innovative methods to create both functional and sculptural works. The 108 works in the exhibition date from the early 1990s through 2003, with many created especially for the tour. Despite the differences in artistic approaches, the works reveal the adventurous spirit of Korea s ceramic tradition, 5,000 years after it began.

Paris Moderne represents the first time a significant collection of art deco objects from the MAMVP toured the United States. Included in the exhibition were enormous gold-lacquered panels made by Jean Dunand for the ocean liner Normandie, loaned by the museum for the first time. This exhibition of 83 worksincluding more than 40 paintings and works on paper, 30 pieces of furniture, 10 sculptures, and other decorative artscelebrates the rich decorative style of Parisian interiors of the 1920s and 30s. Accompanying the furnishings were paintings by major artists including Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy, André Derain, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, and Pablo Picasso.

Debuting in 1987 at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., this exceptional exhibition with more than 70 works from the Helga series included finished paintings in tempera and dry brush as well as drawings and works in watercolor. From 1971 until 1985, Wyeth undertook a long, intensive study of one model, Helga Testorf. Testorf was one of the artist s neighbors in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and Wyeth s private project for some 14 years. He created approximately 240 works the volume of work is characteristic in many ways of his approach toward a subject of special interest repeated, investigatory and diverse. The way it was created was perhaps less typical. The series was done in nearly complete privacy, without revealing to anyone the existence of the series, the identity of the model or the extent of the project. Helga Testorf provided a means for Wyeth to explore the complexity of the human figure. She was presented in almost every human aspect clothed, nude, indoors, outdoors, in recognizable settings and against neutral backgrounds. With the Helga series, Wyeth tested the limits of his imagination using a single model. Testorf, who had never been an artist s model before, was equal to his challenge, enduring and even extending long sessions posing for the artist. In 1985, Andrew Wyeth began admitting others into the world he had created through the Helga series. Although the following year saw great media interest, the Helga series has been in the public eye just a few times.

Never before toured, selected works from the world-famous collection of the artist s estate are offered for exhibition in the United States for the first time. These works, along with some of Whistler s personal effects, were donated to the Hunterian by Rosalind Birnie Philip, youngest sister of Whistler s wife Beatrix. The items provide an intimate portrait of the life and times of this famed American expatriate. The Hunterian Art Gallery has by far the most extensive collection of Whistler s art, ranging from paintings to prints to sketch designs for costumes, interiors and graphic images. Included in this exhibition of 129 works are a dozen paintings, 57 prints, and personal belongings such as silverware, porcelain, manuscripts and books.

Material Terrain: A Sculptural Exploration of Landscape and Place is a traveling exhibition featuring indoor and outdoor works of eleven artists who employ diverse materials and techniques to address the uneasy balance between the natural and the constructed environment. Probing myriad associations of landscape and place, the artists reveal the fantasy of nature as a place of retreat and wonder; nostalgia for a pristine pre-industrialized landscape; and desire and eroticism evident in cycles of cultivation, production and consumption. By employing richly symbolic objects and installations, the artists in Material Terrain reveal complex affiliations to the environment. Through exposing what partnerships are forged, they allow us to consider the variety of ways in which we view ourselves in the context of nature.

Marilyn Monroe: Life as a Legend

Sculpture Transformed incorporates 67 objects that exemplify 40 years of Schicks experimentation with form, texture, and color. Her body sculptures are most often seen in the form of large-scale head ornaments, massive ceremonial collars, cloaks, and back sculptures that seem to soar from the wearer. This hallmark exhibition highlights these acclaimed body sculptures, while taking the viewer on a voyage through a visual evolution of Schicks style. In addition to representing Schicks wearable art constructions, this spectacular retrospective will include Schicks renowned trompe loeil creations of everyday objects. These pieces vividly transform and interpret the mundane: a bracelet masquerades as a teapot while a portion of a brick sidewalk becomes a cloak; a necklace entangles the wearer in glowing threads reminiscent of a dew spangled spider web. Works in this second grouping will invite the visitor into a unique artistic sensibility that generates uniquely aesthetic connections from everyday experience.
