Hopalong Cassidy Takes Darwin is a factual account of William Boyd’s event-packed two days in the Northern Territory capital in 1954; Part Two: Hopalepidopter Almost Takes Darwin is the libretto/storyboard created for Danius Kesminas in 2014; and Part Three: Invasion of the Puppets contains Lee McRae’s marvelous photographs of the Master of Architecture students’ amazing hand puppet-depictions of the opera’s characters.

It stands to reason that writings on 'sense of place' focus on where people live. This monograph, however, respectfully turns its back on peopled environments in order to consider marginal lands--where the living ain't easy and the inhabitants few. Geography matters, indeed, limits, molds, colors human life, determines sensibilities. Following a heuristic thread laid down by social anthropologist Victor Turner, the authors tap into the concept of liminality to scout out a path through landscape, geographic essence, liminaires, aesthetics, the sacred, hierophanticy, back country as wellspring, liminoids, and our counterfeit self. The authors source two case studies in their own backyards: Lockwood's Northwest Coast of Canada and Quillien's Four Corners of the American Southwest.

The Substitute Teachers' Survival Manual was recommended to you/provided for you, or purchased out of interest. Professors of education may also find this manual interesting as relatively few of them have had experience with substitute teaching. It is one of the valuable resources that “subs” can use. This was designed to help make a potentially very difficult job perhaps a lot easier. The manual is designed to help you not only survive but to feel confident and in relatively full control when you are working with students for perhaps the first time. For best results, read through this entire manual, hopefully before your first substitute teaching session. Most of the information provided in this manual is geared towards middle school/high school but a great deal of it is applicable to younger populations. Ideally, the substitute teacher can work with almost any age of student, but the ideal is not common. Most substitutes tend to work with just the population they feel most comfortable with, and this is often the best thing to do unless the reader has a great need for salary and is willing to take whatever comes around for subbing opportunities. What Others Think about the Book: This guide by Jonathan Coron contains sound and practical advice for substitute teachers in elementary, middle school, and high school. The book would also be suitable for beginning teachers, because it gives common sense procedures for dealing with a myriad of potential problems. Many of these problems could be headed off simply by following the writer’s examples and guidelines. Humour, action, unexpected twists and turns, along with the right combination of endearing personalities, fondly remembered for the trail of heart-throbbing girls left in their wake. Whilst a lot of fun, the apparent joyous spontaneity belies the careful orchestration of all aspects of production. Little wonder this memorable group of young kids from the 60s hasn’t escaped Derham Groves’ attention, nor is it surprising that the 50th anniversary of the band’s first Australian tour in 1968 has been celebrated with his signature ‘package of engagement’ culminating in this significant publication. As The Monkees prepare for their 2019 Australian tour, Groves is contemplating retirement from three decades of teaching architecture at universities in Melbourne. Groves is an extraordinary educator with the unlikely knack of merging popular culture, scorned by many as commonplace, with the arguably more esoteric dialogue of architectural theory. In engaging his audience, he also casts a broad net beyond the classroom to the community at large. Groves, the teacher, is also curator, constantly formulating narratives through surviving material fragments including magazines, photos, film clips, and general memorabilia. For this most recent project, almost two hundred Masters students were asked to craft hand puppets as portraits of the four Monkees, as part of their research assignment. Groves explains “…it’s one of my favourite exercises because it can liberate students from the conventions of architectural discourse which, far too often in my view, confuses good taste with good design”. Architects constantly sketch and construct models to explore or clarify form in space (and space within form) whilst prompting the intellect to interrogate concepts and broader possibilities. [...] believed portraiture to be central to his work stating: ‘I love people. I’m painting portraits with my buildings all the time. Take this Arts Centre, now. It’s a portrait of Melbourne of the time …. This is a rich, smug city. Pretty conservative ….’Expression within architecture has always been self-referential. For centuries, successive generations of architects have contributed to an ever-expanding dialogue through reimagining existing precedents. The Parthenon and Pantheon are but two of the icons underpinning much of the history of Western architecture. A building’s DNA might be blatantly obvious, or more subtly discernible through layering of influences from several sources. Architecture’s gene pool is continually enriched through theoretical constructs, often evolving from simple and common-place sources. The 19th-century architectural theorist Gottfried Semper foreshadowed the vision of the 20th-century skyscraper (characterised by its skeletal structural frame clad with non-load bearing ‘curtain’ walls) by hypothesizing the origin of architecture within the structure of the traditional Polynesian hut; a dwelling deemed as befitting the 18th-century humanist ideal of the uncorrupted noble savage. Whilst architectural theory frequently evolves from simple sources to more complex constructs, repetitive application does tend to lead to the consolidation of a succinct style.

Monkeemania in Australia: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of The Monkees' Australian Tour in 1968

'The Cabin' offers a snapshot of what life was like through the eyes of children on a farm in Indiana in the late 1800s. A creative non-fiction work, the story is based on the Herr family who has farmed for six generations in Boone County, Indiana. The story follows the children of Benjamin Levi and Abigail Davis Herr over the course of several seasons, beginning in 1892. Photos and illustrations from the Herr family as well as The Boone County Historical Society are included. Originally intended as a children's book, it is for readers of all ages, especially those with a love of local and regional history. All proceeds from the sale of this book benefit The Boone County Historical Society.

From the ForewordWe seek refuge at many points in our lives and the natural world is the haven in which solace may be found. A morning walk among the trees, sitting on a bench and gazing at the broad vistas, or dangling feet in the cool water of a prairie stream can heal and refresh a person exhausted by modern life. This is the story of such a place.Many Dubuquers know it simply as 'The Park' as if no other park existed anywhere, since it is as comfortable and familiar as your own neighborhood or backyard. For generations 'The Park' has served as the setting for family get-togethers, community celebrations and personal reflection. Going to 'The Park' could be expected or exceptional depending on the event. As a retreat on a hot summer day, the wading pool and shady glens were always ten degrees cooler than elsewhere in the city. The annual opening celebration on Mother's Day with the Order of the Arrow Pancake Breakfast was generally cold and windy and damp! It is a place of memories and a place to make memories - some shared and others deeply personal. This is my story of memories of this place.Eagle Point Park is a place of outstanding beauty where nature and man have worked harmoniously to please and thrill, enchant and awe. Each generation over the past 100 years has left cherished indicators of their relationship to beauty in 'The Park' - those tree lined drives, cozy stone shelters, familiar beds of peonies and sublime panoramas. My name is Hank Kohler. In 1979 three companions and I paddled two canoes from near our cabin in west central Minnesota to Hudson Bay. We traveled about 1300 miles in seventy days and went from agriculture to forested lakes and finally the sub tundra region where we had a polar bear lope through our camp.In the spring and summer of 2021 I paddled over 1900 miles from the same starting point in the other direction to the Gulf of Mexico. With the help of friends who took turns in the front of the canoe, we were able to raise tens of thousands of dollars for conservation efforts. Most of the donations came from a Facebook account where I posted daily reports that let people know where we were and what we had been experiencing. It was something I looked forward to each night after the tents were up, and while watching the sun set across the Mississippi. Soon we had quite an online following. I enjoyed reading the comments and concerns and was asked by several individuals if I would write a book about the adventure that would describe the reasons behind the endeavor and what it was like, mile after mile. I began to embrace the idea but felt it important to have some additional content beyond our day-to-day happenings including thoughts, observations, and opinions. I didn't want it to be scientific and choppy. I hoped the book would have an easy, comfortable flow to it, like the river itself or when you're listening to a familiar country ballad. I also decided to include at the end of a day's narrative a suggested song to accompany the events. You could read this book like any other and just go through it at your normal pace, or you could make it last and do a page each night while the musical selection for the day plays on your phone. Then the book will take as long as our adventure and you will have something to look forward to every day, just as we did.
