<p>J. M. William Turner (17751851), Claude Monet (18401926), and Cy Twombly (1928 2011) are three of the greatest painters of the last 150 years. All three artists were considered radical in their time and initially met with controversy when pushing the boundaries of the conventions of painting. This groundbreaking study focuses on their late work, which exhibits an ease and an intensity that comes from the confidence that accompanies age. A review of earlier preoccupations and a strong sense of mortality are also common characteristics of this period of life. While the publication highlights the modernity of Turner and Monet, it also demonstrates the strong appeal of classicist tendencies in the painting and sculpture of Twombly. The interest in Romanticism and the sublime, which far from ceasing in the mid-nineteenth century continues to prevail today, is among the various sub-themes discussed.
