<p>This is the first modern edition of the complete lute and bandora works of the sixteenth-century English composer, Anthony Holborne. Holborne's lute music is equal in quality to that of his more famous contemporary, John Dowland, and he was one of the few Elizabethans to write works for the bandora. Each of the seventy-one pieces in this volume appears in two forms: the original tablature notation and a transcription into modern notation. The editor's Introduction presents all that is known of Holborne's life, and his notes give valuable information about the printed and manuscript sources of each piece.</p>

The cittern was popular in the sixteenth century and on into the Elizabethan and Jacobean ages. Despite the popularity of the instrument, not many sources of cittern music are extant. The present collection contains the complete modern edition of The Cittharn Schoole by Anthony Holborne, printed in 1597, and all other known works for cittern solo by the same composer. The other known works were transcribed from manuscripts and early print sources. This volume contains 68 pieces for cittern, plus three variants, as well as Notes on the Tablature.

The Instrumental Music of Giovanni Legrenzi (Harvard Publications in Music)

One of the pivotal figures in Italian Baroque music, Giovanni Legrenzi worked in Bergamo, Ferrara, and Venice, and closed his career as maestro di cappella at San Marco. He composed in nearly all genres then cultivated: opera, oratorio, cantata, sacred music, and music for instrumental ensemble. Both Bach and Handel borrowed his themes for their own compositions. This second volume of Legrenzi's instrumental works provides a critical edition of the contents of his La Cetra, Opus 10 (1673) and is designed for both performer and scholar. It comprises 18 sonatas, all of which can be classified as church sonatas. They are composed for various combinations of stringed instruments, six each for two, three and four instruments. Among the sonatas for four instruments are two that are playable in two different keys and either on viols o come piace. Several others reveal an interesting connection between Venetian opera and the sonata form. Bonta completes the volume with a discussion of 17th-century performance practice.
