This is the third of four volumes that constitute the official history of all Hertfordshire Yeomanry and Artillery units. Reorganisation after the First World War saw the amalgamation of the Hertfordshire Yeomanry and the two Royal Field Artillery batteries as a four-battery field artillery unit - initially brigade, from 1938 regiment - with centres at Hertford, St Albans, Hitchin and Watford. Then, early in 1939, a second field artillery regiment was formed. The regiments mobilised in August - September 1939 and served throughout the Second World War, one field regiment in the Normandy Landings and in the subsequent campaign in North-West Europe, the other in Malaya and Singapore. A third field regiment was also formed during the war.

Herts V.R.: An Account of the Hertfordshire Volunteer Regiment, 1914-1921

A useful supplement to all four volumes of the history of the Hertfordshire Yeomanry and Artillery units, this very fully researched account lists awards for gallantry, for meritorious service and for long and efficient service, giving citations for gallantry and meritorious service awards wherever possible. Awards of Coronation and Jubilee Medals are also listed, as are various forms of commendation, including the Lord-Lieutenant's Certificate for outstanding service in the Territorial Army.

Hertfordshire Yeomanry and Artillery Honours and Awards

From early 1948 to the autumn of 1951, the question of whether the Home Guard should be raised anew in peacetime was under constant consideration in the face of the real fear that Soviet forces might invade Europe. Whilst the Labour government's policy was that in peacetime a Home Guard could be planned for but not actually raised, as soon as the Conservatives were returned to power in October 1951, the new force was raised and came into being in April 1952. If Britain had been invaded, the Home Guard's duties would have included keeping roads open for the passage of counter-attack forces, securing RAF radar stations and other key points and assistance to the Civil Defence services. Yet very many fewer men volunteered than had been planned for; in Hertfordshire the picture was even worse than in the country as a whole. Still, the new battalions organised training exercises, including one codenamed 'Lumbago' which drew unfavourable comment in the national press as a seeming jibe at the men 'past the first bloom of youth' who were the main targets of recruitment drives. In other exercises 'major battles' were fought near Sandridge and Codicote, with the role of the enemy being played by army cadets. Ultimately, though, it made sense to reduce the force to 'cadre' battalions - slimmed-down frameworks which would be ready to absorb large numbers of men if and when the crisis came. As he had back in 1940, Prime Minister Winston Churchill took a close personal interest in the Home Guard and frequently voiced his support for their role in the defence of Britain. Indeed, it was only when he stepped down in 1955 that the Home Guard's raison d'etre could be openly questioned: within two years it had been disbanded. This is the first properly researched account of the post-war Home Guard in any county and it also incorporates very full details of the national picture. An appendix details the weapons used by the force, and all commissioned officers in the Hertfordshire battalions are also listed.

This book gives an account of the Army Cadet Force and the Army contingents of the Combined Cadet Force both nationally and within Hertfordshire. Having given the national picture, Col. Sainsbury presents a detailed account of the development of Hertfordshire's cadet units. A wealth of historical research is accompanied by almost 200 plates. Having sprung up in the mid-nineteenth century, the unregulated cadet forces were formalised in 1863 when new regulations came into force providing for Cadet Corps formed of boys of at least twelve years of age (initially) to be attached to Volunteer Corps or Administrative Battalions. The majority of early Cadet Corps were formed in public schools. In Hertfordshire the three contingents of the Combined Cadet Force that have given the longest continuous service are Haileybury (formed in 1886), Berkhamsted Collegiate School (1891) and St Albans School (1903). In 1908, in an attempt to improve the supply of officers for the Army and Auxiliary Forces, the existing School Cadet Corps and University Volunteer Battalions were reorganised into two divisions of a new Officers Training Corps. Cadets would attain a standard, by the time they left school, that included proficiency in shooting, care of arms, drill, tactical handling of at least 25 men and semaphore signalling, and would lead to a commission in the Reserve Forces. Both the school contingents and the 'Cadet Force', which eventually became the Army Cadet Force, came into their own during the two World Wars, when they provided valuable pre-enlistment training. In peacetime, however, there were constant pressures upon cadet contingents with regard to funding and facilities; their very raison d'etre was often called into question. The Cadet Corps' determination to overcome the many obstacles that have beset them throughout their history makes for a most engaging account.
