The Spanish artist Antoni Tapies first received worldwide recognition in the 1950s for his "matter" paintings: relief-like works composed of dry pigments, sand, marble-dust and paint, which he scraped, incised and pierced. His early paintings have been likened to walls, their graffiti-like scrawls denoting the only means of free expression available under the Franco regime. The artist's later works express less tangible symbols and themes. This volume is the catalogue of an exhibition organized by the Guggenheim Museum, New York, in collaboration with the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris. It presents the essentials of Tapies's art - an original use of texture and materials, coupled with an expression of intense intellectual, political and artistic feeling. The book provides an overview of the artist's life and career, and also includes original translations from the Catalan of four of the artist's principal writings on art.

In April 2006, the Department of State announced that the late Cuban-born conceptual artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres would represent the United States at the 2007 Venice Biennale (June 1-November 21). This much sought-after and long-out-of-print volume, reissued by the Guggenheim Museum for the occasion, was originally published to accompany the artist's solo exhibition at the Museum in 1995, one year before his untimely death at the age of 38. Gonzalez-Torres wanted a readable book, not a catalogue per se--something, he said, that one could take to the beach. Pleasure was an integral part of his art (and his life). While he understood that art was innately political and, by necessity, a vehicle for cultural criticism, he believed that social critique and enjoyment were not, by any means, mutually exclusive. In/sight: African photographers, 1940 to the present

Presenting the work of 30 diverse photographers from throughout Africa since 1940, this is the complete catalogue of an exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Studio portraits of the 1940s by photographers such as the Ivory Coast's Cornelius Yao Azaglo Augustt, Senegal's Salla Casset and Meissa Gay, and Mali's Seydou Keita depict a period of great transformation in Africa. Examples of the 1950s include work by Bob Gasani, Peter Magubane and Lionel Oostendorp for the magazine "Drum", and featured photographers of the 1960s and 1970s include Samuel Fosso (Central African Republic), David Goldblatt (South Africa), Ricardo Rangel (Mozambique) and Malick Sidibe (Mali). These more recent photographs chronicle the development of independent countries and the emergence of Africa as part of the modern world. Contemporary artists in North Africa and Nigeria are represented by work on new themes.

Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto is renowned for his elegant photographic series of seascapes, theaters, museum dioramas, and Buddhist statuary. His new series presents life-size, black-and-white portraits of historical figures-Henry VIII and each of his wives, Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, Oscar Wilde, and Emperor Hirohito, among others-photographed in wax museums, isolated against black backgrounds, and dramatically lit so as to create haunting Rembrandtesque images.
