The Jewelers' Manual is a successor to the popular Jewelers' Pocket Reference Book, edited by Robert M. Shipley and published by the Gemological Institute of America in five editions, from 1947 through 1951. The present work is all new, differing in scope, purpose and format from the original publication; hence, the change of title. The purpose of the Manual is to offer a concise, comprehensive, accurate presentation of information and data pertaining to the major categories of merchandise in the jewelry industry and related trades. It is designed to provide an easy-to-use, authoritative reference for the busy jeweler in his daily activities, and to answer the multitude of questions asked by inquiring customers. It is particularly valuable as a means of orienting the salesperson who is new to the jewelry business. Liddicoat wrote the diamond, pearl and gem-testing sections, as well as a portion of the glossary, and acted in the capacity of supervising editor. Copeland shared the writing task and was responsible for the overall compilation and editing, including the required literary research, rewriting and coordination of text and illustrative material. Jeanne G. M. Martin prepared the layout and artwork, typed the final manuscript for the printer and assisted with the proofreading; she also took the photographs of diamond imperfections, cutting discrepancies and famous diamond replicas. We are indebted to many jewelry suppliers, manufacturers and trade associations for providing artwork and information for some of the tables and text; their contributions are acknowledged throughout the book.
