In 1913 Hitler arrived in Munich as an artist. Shortly after, he joined the German army fighting on the Western Front. Returning to Munich he joined a small political party which developed into the Nazi party. In Munich Hitler turned from artist to soldier and finally into a politician before becoming the dictator of Germany. These vital events are core to the understanding of the Third Reich and the origins of the Second World War. When US troops captured Munich in 1945, General Dwight Eisenhower congratulated his soldiers on the defeat of the 'cradle of the Nazi Beast'. In May 1939 Captain Archibald Maule Ramsay, a Tory MP, formed an anti-Semitic secret society he called The Right Club. Many of its members were Nazi sympathisers and an inner core were politicians, peers of the realm, prominent socialites and officers in the armed forces. Ramsay recorded their names in a stout, red, leather-bound ledger that was seized by Special Branch in May 1940. It came to be known as The Red Book and its contents are published here in full for the first time. On July 19, 1937, the exhibition "Entartete Kunst" (Degenerate Art) opened in Munich. On show were 650 paintings and sculptures by 112 artists that were considered out of line with Nazi ideology. The pictures were jammed together with labels insulting the artists. All artwork had been confiscated from 32 German museums. An exhibition catalogue was on sale. It listed and discussed selected works.  Expressionism, Impressionism, Surrealism, Cubism and other Avant-garde movements were considered degenerate. The exhibition was initiated by Joseph Goebbels, minister of propaganda, and managed by Adolf Ziegler, president of the Reich Chamber of Arts. This photo book with about 270 pictures was published in 1933 as a propaganda work to give the general public an insight into Adolf Hitler's life from 1914 to 1933. It covers four periods of Hitler's life: the artist, the soldier, the politician and the statesman.  In 1914, when WW1 broke out, Hitler was living as an artist in Munich. He became a soldier in a Bavarian regiment and spent the next four years in the trenches. Returning to Munich after the war he joined in 1919 a small nationalist party. He relaunched it as the Nazi Party and became a full time politician. In 1923, with the so-called Beer Hall Putsch, Hitler tried in vain to overthrow the Bavarian Government. After a year in prison, in 1925 he reformed the party, making it more electable and paving his way to become Chancellor in 1933. Hitler's Day of German Art 1938: The Programme of the Procession

On 16th July 1939, the third annual Great German Art Exhibition opened at the House of German Art in Munich, one of the eight exhibitions staged annually until 1944. Participation in one of these Great German Art Exhibitions was almost indispensable for an artist's reputation in Germany. The official arts magazines and general press reviewed almost exclusively artists who had been exhibited in the Munich show.  Several thousand works of art had been submitted for the exhibition and only a few hundred went on show. The president of the Reich Culture Chamber, Adolf Ziegler, supervised the selection of paintings, while the sculptors Arno Breker and Josef Wackerle were responsible for the sculptures. There were no formal criteria. The selection was based on Hitler's taste and on that of the judges. 'Hitler's Olympic Summer Games 1936' features more then 200 photos and several drawings relating to this spectacular and historical edition of the Games in Berlin. Adolf Hitler opened the event on 1st August 1936. The games ended on 16th August.  The book itself was meant to appeal mainly to a younger generation who liked to collect and trade the more than 200 collectable photos. The photos came free with the purchase of cigarettes. The pictures where then glued into the book. These collectable images were very popular at the time but usually with themes such as animals or plants. Hitler used the cigarette pictures to promote a political message.
