HOFFMAN, OKMULGEE COUNTY, OKLAHOMA: DOING BUSINESS ON THE INDIAN TERRITORY FRONTIER is a 240-page history of business activity at what was first a Creek Indian Nation and then later an Okmulgee County town site, documented by means of a unique collection of photographs and other graphic forms that illustrate what life was like there between around 1870 up to more recent times. The focus of the book is on the businesses of Hoffman Townsite, but information about many former residents, buildings, homes, landmarks, and key events is included as well. The intent of the author was to capture the look and feel of day-to-day life in one of the many town sites that were incorporated soon after land in the Oklahoma Indian Territory was made available for outside settlement.

MOCK'S BAD STOMP	In the Indian Territory of pre-statehood Oklahoma, a brutal assault has been committed against a young Creek woman by the name of Etta Jane "Mock" Burnham. A full description of how and why the assault occurred is revealed, but, surprisingly, sympathy for the victim is not what it ought to be. Soon, the focus shifts more toward the consequences of the crime than the incident itself. 	Two personal problems had turned Mock into the rebellious and angry young woman she was - the toxic relationship that existed between herself and her parents and her outright hatred of her backwater hometown. Things had been said and done that could not be taken back or forgotten, much less forgiven; blind and thoughtless anger on Mock's part had made it much too late for that. All she could think of was how to escape the choking constraints of her parental home and the hometown she abhorred. 	Mock's own terrible attitude had turned her into a vengeful bridge burner as well, a young woman who had not only taken full advantage of but also perversely relished every opportunity that arose to alienate the very people - family members, friends, and neighbors - who in the normal course of things would have helped her when the going got rough. Her own behavior led first to an ill-fated association with the man most everyone in her community referred to as "Crazy Early" and then to what eventually came to be referred to as "The Story of Mock's Bad Stomp". Mock was a young woman who asked for trouble, and, sadly for her, that's exactly what she wound up getting. **********

OKLAHOMA INDIAN TERRITORY SETTLER Colonel George Caine, after enduring two failures in business, went on the prowl for a jump up in life. Bonnie Tiger, a naïve but property-rich young Creek Indian woman, became easy prey for the crafty and intelligent Colonel, who ignored her after they married to resume his quest for success. When Bonnie died young, she left the Colonel to raise their six children alone. His inexcusable neglect of their family to focus on growing a business had disastrous effects on every one of them, as well as on himself. While the Colonel devoted his attention to keeping his business afloat, the everyday lives of his children went by without him. By the time he realized the error of his ways, they had no affection for him at all. His favorite son, Luther, to whom he had devoted the most time and attention, was dutiful only for as long as there was something in it for him. Luther's own marriage became a tragic instance of family history repeating itself; he neglected his own children, the Colonel's grandchildren, even worse than the Colonel neglected him. Father and son were equally oblivious to the destructive impact their neglect would have on the emotional growth and sense of self-worth of their children. Unless the cycle of neglect is broken, generations tend to repeat the same mistakes and cause the same traumas. Were the Colonel's grandchildren able to break the emotional bonds that held them captive during their formative years? Were they able to beat the odds when they played against a deck stacked against them?
