The critical challenges to the British NHS are the consequences of us all living longer, having to manage chronic conditions over time, expecting and demanding more, and being denied many innovative new drugs (notably, for cancer) which cannot be afforded at present by the too narrowly funded NHS. The Turf: A Social and Economic History of Horse Racing (Classics in Social History)

This is the second edition of the classic on the history of British horse racing. It provides a detailed and far-ranging social and economic analysis of the major changes in British flat racing, in particular in the period between 1830 and 1939. Four major themes are explored. Firstly, the changing character and structure of the sport. Secondly, the morality of racing, which was a corrupt sport par excellence for much of the nineteenth century. Thirdly, on four categories of participants in racing – jockeys, trainers, owners and breeders. Here, the author assesses whether or not these could make money out of racing. Fourthly, the book examines gambling and its important symbiotic relationship with racing. The televised, sponsored, carefully governed sport today is a vastly different affair from that of the 18th century. Then racing was a free, social event, the highlight of the entertainment calendar for the bulk of the local community. By the late 19th century most race meetings were highly commercial enterprises, requiring payment from all spectators, many of whom had travelled some distance to attend. The excitement and historical interest of these meetings is well captured here.

The commemoration of the Easter Rising centenary in 2016 posed the key question of whether - leaving aside the revolutionary decade (1913-1923) - it was appropriate to talk about a "revolutionary Ireland". The revolutionary decade brought about a change of governance and led to Ireland's independence, but the new Irish Free State fell short of the proclaimed intentions of the imagined republic. The new state veered away from the influence of labour and socialism to become an institutional replica, and a staunchly socially conservative one, of the British system. It was only from the 1960s onwards that Irish society started to open itself up to more liberating social practices and patterns. This volume offers entirely new work which highlights the historical moments at which it would be possible to talk about a political or social revolution in Ireland, while also considering that in the years when Ireland became "the Celtic Tiger", certain social involutions took place. The contributors include independent researchers who write about their topics within a theoretically informed, scholarly, framework. Yet it is precisely their independence from academia that provides their chapters with fresh and multidisciplinary perspectives. Others are well established scholars. It is precisely the wealth of approaches and of disciplines (history, sociology, film studies and literary studies) that enriches the volume and broadens the scope. This volume discusses the idea of revolution in Ireland from a multi- and inter-disciplinary perspective. It covers, on the one hand, the political revolution, mainly the Easter Rising 1916, and on the other the social transformations that the country underwent following the claims for civil rights and the sexual revolution of the late 1960s both in the USA and Europe. Yet Ireland's European location has made the country easily permeable to external influences. These, when allied with Ireland's process of modernisation, managed to rupture social strictures. Yet, while patterns in religious practice, gender roles and sexuality have inexorably moved towards much more liberal standards, during the decade known as "Celtic Tiger Ireland" the country experienced an involutionary process as regards racism and discrimination against emigrants and asylum seekers. These studies approach the Easter Rising and the revolutionary period from different perspectives and methodologies: archival research, oral history, postcolonial analysis of documentaries on the Easter Rising, critical discourse analysis of witness statements and research into gendered violence in the Easter Rising aftermath. The Mummy!: Or a Tale of the Twenty-Second Century

This famous, strange, wild novel was first issued anonymously by the 'Prince of Puffers', the fashionable publisher Henry Colburn, as a&nbsp;three-volume novel&nbsp;in 1827. This new scholarly edition places it in its previous and contemporary contexts. It concerns the Egyptian mummy of&nbsp;Cheops, who is brought back to life in the year 2126. The novel describes a future filled with advanced technology&nbsp;and features one of the earliest known examples of a "Mummy's curse. It attempted to predict the state of improvement to which this country might possibly arrive. Jane Loudon (1897-1858) was a definite product of the changing ideas about women's involvement in education, literature and the arts.&nbsp; She was interested in science for the whole of her life and participated in journalism and popular science writing. She is best known for promoting women's practical involvement in horticulture.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Mummy!: or a Tale of the Twenty-Second Century&nbsp;was published when she was twenty.&nbsp; It was reviewed favourably by a society which connected ancient Egypt with spectacle, antiquarian interest and as an example of a stable civilisation.&nbsp; Loudon's imagination of the future explores changes in society, technology and gendered experience which are significant to understand the culture of the period, the development of women's writing and the origins of science and speculative writing.&nbsp;This edition contextualises the narrative in relation to social change and reform in the early part of the 19th-century. &nbsp;It considers new research on Loudon's life and career and it examines the relationship between this text and other early science and fantastic writing which emerge into distinct genres during this period. Loudon may have drawn inspiration from the general fashion for anything Pharaonic, inspired by French researches during the Napoleonic invasion of Egypt. There was also the 1821 public unwrappings of Egyptian mummies in a theatre near&nbsp;Piccadilly, which she may have attended as a girl. She also very likely read the 1818 novel by&nbsp;Mary Shelley,&nbsp;Frankenstein.&nbsp;Loudon deals in greater clarity with elements from the earlier book: the loathing for the much-desired object, the immediate arrest for crime and attempt to lie one's way out of it. Loudon's 'Mummy' gives shrewd advice on politics and life to those who befriend him.

We are now publishing hardcover revised editions of the first two volumes of Professor William D. Rubinstein’s standard works of research and reference on Who Were the Rich? Several entirely new volumes will also follow shortly. EER envisages issuing a new volume every six months. The following volumes will cover: 1840-1914. These volumes comprise a unique and original work which provides comprehensive biographical information on all 884 persons who left personal estates of £100,000 or more in Britain from 1809, when these sources begin in a usable form. £100,000 is the equivalent of about £10 million today. This work by Professor William D. Rubinstein, the leading academic expert on wealth-holding in Britain over the past two centuries, comprises a series of volumes which will provide similar information on all persons leaving £100,000 or more down to 1914. For every person included, accurate information is given about his or her occupation or source of wealth, parentage and family background, education, marriage, children, and heirs, religion, political involvement, and land ownership. Virtually none of this information has ever been compiled before, and this work provides a unique, accurate, and realistic of the wealthy elite in Britain during and just after the Napoleonic Wars. The picture which emerges is a surprisingly conservative one, with wealth centred not in the new industries of the Industrial Revolution, but in London, especially in the City of London, as well as in the landed aristocracy, in fortunes made in the east and West Indies, and riches derived from "Old Corruption," by government employees and placemen. The Introduction to this work provides useful summaries of the main trends. This set of volumes will be of considerable interest to economic, social, and political historians, to genealogists and family historians, and to local historians and historians of local communities.
