The Oceanic Hydrozoa is a seminal piece of marked distinction by Huxley, the eminent biologist, nicknamed Darwin's bulldog for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. This monograph, first published by the Ray Society in 1859, is a description of the Calycophoridae and Physophoridae observed whilst Huxley served as Assistant-Surgeon on the survey vessel HMS Rattlesnake in the years 1846-50. The twelve plates at the back of the book have become an invaluable record of the study of the Oceanic Hydrozoa.

A Monograph Of The Fresh-Water Polyzoa is a complete and exhaustive work by the eminent naturalist George James Allman, published by the Ray Society in 1856. This monograph discusses in great detail the anatomy, physiology and homologies of the Polyzoa before advancing to the zoographical element of his piece; including his subject's behaviour and classification. A prominent academic, Allman produced this monograph during his tenure as Professor of Botany at the Royal Academical Institution, Belfast.

On its publication An Account of Two Successful Operations for Restoring a Lost Nose (1816) by Joseph Carpue, was the most important work on reconstructive surgery since Gasparo Tagliacozzi, the Sixteenth Century Italian surgeon. Carpue's work is considered to represent the beginnings of modern plastic surgery, the first time for almost 200 years that this type of surgery had been examined in such detail. The widespread religious condemnation of Tagliacozzi's work had meant that methods of plastic surgery ceased to be openly researched for many years. Carpue's account describes procedures on two British Army officers using 'Hindu' rhinoplasty, which included an introduction on the history of both 'Hindu' and 'Taliacotian' methods.
