The negotiation of meaning, or, the process of creating, sharing and repairing meaning, is central to communication and to all human social activity. The present volume investigates how speakers of a foreign language collaborate with each other and with native speakers to negotiate meaning in face to face interaction and it underlines how complex that process with its different communicative goals really is. The study further accounts for how the ability of foreign language speakers to negotiate meaning evolves as language is acquired. This book starts by reviewing the main second language acquisition research (SLAR) studies that have been conducted on the subject. An interdisciplinary qualitative framework based on interactive sociolinguistics, pragmatics, discourse/conversation analysis and ethnography of communication is adopted to investigate meaning processes. The present investigation has as its focal point the study of conversations conducted in Spanish, which means that an important gap within SLAR, which up until now has chiefly concentrated on analysing interactions in English as a second language, has been filled. This is a subtle and detailed investigation which provides much insight into the complex nature of how meaning is negotiated in a foreign language. The book is exceptional because of its broad and interdisciplinary perspective and because of its process-oriented qualitative approach. This study will be of interest to researchers in the field of language acquisition, teaching practitioners, teacher trainers, curriculum compilers and students of applied linguistics.

The Medieval Opus is a broad but detailed study of the art of imitation as rewriting that was practiced in medieval French texts and in texts in other languages influenced by French models. It contains the proceedings of a symposium on this topic. The volume will be of interest to scholars and students of medieval French as well as other medieval literatures influenced by French models. The range of texts is broad: from epic to romance and from lyric to late medieval lyrico-narrative genres. The authors teach in a number of countries in Europe and North America, and they represent a variety of approaches, ages, and critical perspectives on medieval rewriting. Two major concepts inform the papers: the bridge work and the specimen text. The bridge work (Tony Hunt's term) refers here two works that have identifiable links to others and that, by those links, reveals something of the art of writing for both works. Specimen texts are works representative of the art of imitation illustrated by the bridge works. The proceedings move beyond the analysis of a general art of composition to investigate original rewriting in specific works that serve as specimen texts. The goal of the proceedings has been to appreciate originality within the framework of the medieval art of literary writing.

Geoffrey Lord argues that current meta-national conceptions of postmodernism need serious reconsideration to take national cultural contexts into account. In the wake of proliferating discourses around globalisation and culture, some central questions around cultural politics have acquired a commonsensical and hegemonic character in contemporary intellectual discourse. The politics of difference, the possibilities of hybridity and the potential of multiple liminalities frame much discussion around the transnational dimensions of culture and post-identity politics. While the world seems to be getting ever smaller and globalization has become the ubiquitous buzz-word, regionalism and fragmentation also abound. This might be due to the fact that, far from being the alleged production of cultural homogeneity, the global is constantly re-defined and altered through the local. This tension, pervading much of contemporary culture, has an obvious special relevance for the new varieties of English and the literature published in English world-wide. Postcolonial literatures exist at the interface of English as a hegemonic medium and its many national, regional and local competitors that transform it in the new English literatures. Thus any exploration of a globalization of cultures has to take into account the fact that culture is a complex field characterized by hybridization, plurality, and difference. But while global or transnational cultures may allow for a new cosmopolitanism that produces ever-changing, fluid identities, they do not give rise to an egalitarian global village an asymmetry between centre and periphery remains largely intact, albeit along new parameters. The essays collected in this volume offer readings of literary, theoretical, and filmic texts from the postcolonial world.
