Tags are designed street names, written in the public domain. They are one of the most despised phenomena since long hair on men. They have burrowed their way into the big cities of the world, working both to annoy and tell stories. Now, they tell the tale of how the biggest and most vital artistic trend of the late 20th century originated among children and youths. Martha Cooper documented New York subway paintings in the book Subway Art (1984). But she most preferred tags, the bastard siblings of the pieces, because of their raw energy. Tags are the blue print and uncouth offspring of graffiti writing culture. Cooper went exploring, and found a gold mine just a few blocks from her home! The earliest tags in New York were developed in Washington Heights, North Manhattan, and ten years later, Martha was there with her camera. She documented backyards, bridge supports, parks and pedestrian tunnels with the precision of an ethnographer. The walls were still full of tags from the 60s and 70s, a forgotten gallery. The pictures have lain in Martha's photo archive since then. Featuring interviews with oldschool writers Part 1 and Snake 1, pioneers of the early 70s New York writing scene, and essays on tags and calligraphy, Tag Town is the first book to show early tags in their context. Even in the early 70s, all the basic forms that still appear in modern graffiti writers' work, were there. Tag Town is a lesson in reading tags for beginners, and an eureka moment for the experienced writer. Martha Cooper has documented hip-hop culture since 1980. She is the author of books such as Subway Art, Hip Hop Files, We B Girlz and Street Play.

Finsta is one of the most eyecatching illustrators and designers coming from the European graffiti scene. For the past ten years his work is spreading and is becoming appreciated not only in his native Sweden. Finsta's work is an universe of its own, presenting characters, settings and artifacts such as the Finstablaster, enormous ghettoblasters in wood with a painted front way cooler than any real boom-box. Some of Finsta's work resembles of that of New York artist Dan Witz, where his witty reflections in urban architecture. Finsta's graffiti styles are completely unique. His pieces often have themes that permeate the letters totally. Many of the letters are at the same time characters, building a kind of naive transformers world. Finsta's work contains paintings, comic strips, street art, graffiti styles and commercial work such as club flyers, corporate logos, magazine illustrations and posters. Finsta is a complete artist, which ideas and themes will find new admirers around the world. Finsta's works are above all full of humour and a very humanistic satire. "Being funny is like being innovative, you can't tell the same joke every time. Then it's not funny anymore" says Finsta himself.

The work of a traditional Japanese tattoo master in 1970 In 1970, photographer Martha Cooper came to Tokyo and immediately focused on documenting traditional Japanese tattooist Horibun I. Tokyo Tattoo 1970 is a book about the traditional art of tattooing and a portrait of a master artist.Â Japanese tattoo was a secret art form in the early 1970s. The masters of the traditional techniques were working in small studios, and tattooing was something for a distinguished few.Â No one could foresee the incredible rise of the art of tattoo internationally in the past 20 years. Horibun I worked with traditional Japanese methods, tattoos made by hand, with different sized needles bound to sticks which he dipped into coloured inks. His motifs were all derived from traditional Japanese legends.Â Horibun I was a rare tattooist, as he was open to letting a foreigner come to photograph him and his customers. Tokyo Tattoo 1970 tells the story of a Japanese tattoo master and his work. We see him at work, meet his customers, who show their tattoos, and follow Horibun on a pilgrimage to a holy Shinto shrine.Â Martha Cooper's pictures show the process of the tattooist's work as well as finished motifs from an era long gone.Â Tokyo Tattoo was Martha Cooper's first study of a subculture, which launched her on a ten-year-long immersion into the graffiti and street artÂ of New York City.
