This detailed and carefully reasoned study of the domestic architecture of Mies van der Rohe is a landmark contribution to contemporary understanding of the great architect's work. It is devoted to a close analysis of Mies' residential architecture, built and unbuilt, from 1923 to 1951. Many of its conclusions are pertinent to the whole of Mies' output.  The book presents penetrating discussions of both the Concrete and the Brick Country House projects, two of the famous Five Projects of the 1920s which made Mies' early reputation; and, among others, the Lange and Esters Houses of 1927-1930; the Barcelona Pavilion and Tugendhat House of 1928-1930; and, in America, plans for a house in Wyoming for the Stanley Resors, and the Farnsworth House of 1946-1951. The analysis and the illustrations demonstrate a continuous development toward realization of the goal Mies himself described: "To bring Nature, houses and people into a higher unity."  The original German language edition accompanied an exhibition organized by the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, Krefeld, in conjunction with the Mies van der Rohe Archive of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, on the occasion of the public opening of the restored Lange and Esters Houses, now owned by the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum. All of the works exhibited are reproduced in this volume. Dr. Tegethoff's text, based on extensive research in the Mies Archive and other sources, brings to light much new information on the origins of Mies's ideas, his working methods and relationships with clients, as well as the actual planning and structure of the houses. The response to Rome by eighteenth-century Italian, French, and British artists is the subject of this beautifully illustrated, large-format book. The focal point is a group of approximately 40 drawings and prints by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778), whose dramatic and often fanciful views of Rome helped to create and spread a new vision of antiquity.  Most of the works illustrated are drawn from the collections of the Canadian Centre for Architecture and the Pierpont Morgan Library, whose holdings of Piranesi drawings is the largest in the world. The works encompass the full scope of Piranesi's activities as architect, antiquarian, and designer. Works by Pannini, Fragonard, Robert Adam, Filippo Juvarra, Hubert Robert, Jean-Laurent Legeay, Charles de Wailly, and other eighteenth-century artists who drew inspiration from Roman art, architecture, and the surrounding countryside during this period are also included.  In addition to texts by the three main authors, there are essays by John Wilton-Ely and Elisabeth Kieven, and entries by Henry Millon, Christine Challingsworth, Ruth S. Kraemer, and Jean de Cayeux.

Moving in a different direction, several of his more recent projects, such as the Canadian Tribute to Human Rights and The CCA Garden, are permanent and publicly accessible. Parables and Other Allegories offers a comprehensive historical record of Charney's work. Over 200 illustrations, including 95 color reproductions and 96 duotones, along with Charney's own commentary, provide a critical context for his oeuvre. An introduction by Alessandra, Latour, guest curator of the exhibition, and essays by Patricia C. Phillips and Robert-Jan van Pelt explore various aspects of his projects, among them the roles of collective memory and reiterative narrative as well as the harrowing, shamanic investigations of history and monumental evil in the German Series. An interview by Phyllis Lambert investigates how Charney approaches his work and considers a wide range of issues such as abstraction and representation, the notion of space, and the idea of process as meaning.

Eadweard Muybridge and the photographic panorama of San Francisco, 1850-1880

These photographs from the CCA collection and other private and public collections document one of the supreme technical and conceptual achievements in the history of architectural photography.  On July 14, 1877, Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904) announced in the San Francisco Chronicle the publication of a set of photographs, Panorama of San Francisco from California Street Hill. It was available in two formats: as a set of albumen prints mounted on cabinet cards, and as an album of 11 albumen prints. Approximately one year later, Muybridge rephotographed the view, this time using a mammothplate camera. The result, a breathtaking 360-degree panorama measuring more than 17 feet in length, was published as an album, comprising 13 albumen prints.  This book documents Muybridge's panoramas of a now-vanished San Francisco, and also discusses the antecedents of his work, thereby placing it within its historical context.
