After being a Mormon for forty years, the author was excommunicated by the LDS Church because he would not withdraw publication of this book. In this book he explains how Mormonism has undergone four distinct phases. The first began in 1820 and ended with Joseph Smith’s death in 1844. The second began upon Joseph Smith’s death and ended with abandonment of plural marriage, publicly in 1890 and privately in 1904. In the third phase Mormonism denounced as apostasy its practice of plural wives, marking the first time an orthodox practice became grounds for excommunication. The fourth phase began with David O. McKay and is still underway. In it Mormonism has adopted corporate management techniques to consolidate and direct central church decision-making. The first phase was innovative and expansive, continually adding doctrine, scripture, teachings and ordinances. Subsequent phases have curtailed, abandoned, even denounced earlier teaching and doctrine. Phases two through four have all abandoned doctrine. Growth in these subsequent phases has been defined in terms of political influence, financial gains, cultural inroads, and population growth; while the underlying religion has been curtailed. Today, marketing the institution has become more important to Mormon success than preserving the original religious content. The changes from phase to phase have completely transformed Mormonism, sharing a vocabulary but redefining the terms. Modern Mormonism has now institutionalized change. For the first time in this book Mormonism is candidly described in terms which track the changes by examining doctrine, teachings and practices. Interestingly, the passing of the heavenly gift was anticipated by Joseph Smith’s prophecies and the Book of Mormon.

In this print edition the essays have been updated and some clarifications and additional footnotes have been added.

Essays: Three Degrees

There is currently a groundswell of change taking place in Mormonism. Various denominations, including the largest sect, the LDS Church headquartered in Salt Lake City, are confronting serious questions about the truthfulness of their claims to be the "one true" religion. This book deals with many important events and teachings of the restoration through Joseph Smith. Any who either believe or dispute that Joseph Smith was a prophet, and any who are interested in or are participating in the various denominations of Mormonism will benefit from this book. Joseph Smith founded a religion intended to revolutionize the world. He was restoring ancient truths that were lost through apostasy and endeavoring to guide its adherents in establishing a New Jerusalem in the Americas. None of the various Mormon denominations, from the largest to the smallest, have been faithful to Joseph Smith or his revelations, and therefore have little chance of accomplishing the prophesied promises. This book discusses the earliest roots of Mormonism. It relies extensively on early Mormon documents, diaries, journals, contemporary correspondence and contemporary news sources to trace back to the beginning of the Mormon faith. It examines the social, legal and political influences that have reshaped key doctrines in Mormonism. It is an expansion of many of the subjects Denver Snuffer has already written or spoken about in his other materials.

Preserving the Restoration

Smithsonian Magazine identified Joseph Smith as the most significant religious figure in American history. Yet he remains misunderstood by most Christians, primarily because his legacy has been regarded as Mormon property. In many ways his life mirrors the Apostle Paul. He belongs to the Christian community as much as St. Francis of Assisi, Luther, Tyndale, Wesley, Knox, Williams and Calvin. His worst critics were and are Mormons. They abused him, led mobs against him, conspired to have him imprisoned and ultimately murdered. Mormons have slandered his memory with false histories. Joseph declared to the Mormons in April 1844 (two months before he was murdered): “You don’t know me; you never knew my heart.” That audience and its descendants have been self-interested custodians of Joseph Smith’s legacy. This book separates him from the interests of any institution, and allows him to explain his heart, in his own words. When allowed to speak, he is very different from the Mormon version. This book covers Joseph Smith’s three watershed failures and his written responses. The historical stage is set; then he reacts to the trials. The three episodes are: The quest and failure to distribute priesthood, the quest and failure to establish a community called “Zion,” and his half-year imprisonment in Missouri. He has been vilified and praised as the founder of Mormonism. Over eighty-four different religious sects claim him as their founder. But he is seldom thought of as a Christian thinker, writer and preacher. He taught almost entirely from the Bible. Christians can benefit from knowing his struggle to follow Christ while facing discouraging opposition, betrayal by friends, mob violence, imprisonment and repeated failure. He responded with faith, hope and charity.
