2009 was a special year for Swip Stolk. It marks the 50th anniversary of the start of his career as a graphic designer. In this book he looks back on that period. The quest for new forms and expressions, materials and applications is a constant theme in his development as a graphic designer and visual artist. The foundations were laid in the 1960s and 1970s, when he soon made his name on the innovative front as an exponent of a new generation that was consciously looking for new answers. Swip Stolk has a special place in graphic design in the Netherlands. His work can be recognised from afar as his own: in his very own unique visual style.

Dedicated to graphic designer Gerard Unger (1942–2018), this book presents a case study in the development of modern type design as it unfolds along with the rapid technological shifts that transformed typesetting and publishing over the past 50 years. While most of Unger’s types are variations on the economical Dutch tradition, they are also permeated by his distinctive style, marked by tensive curves and dynamic rhythm. He drew inspiration from abstract art and delighted in the interplay of form and space in letterforms. The book includes a reproduction and translation of Unger’s 1977 exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum, where he began to develop a theory of type design.

The stroke is the most concise and powerful statement of Gerrit Noordzijs theory of writing. First published in Dutch in 1985, the book puts forward a genuine theory of all writing, done with any kind of generating tool. Noordzij starts with fundamentals the space within and between letters and proceeds in stages towards a full account of how the strokes of writing can be formed, and an analysis of the qualities of letters. Along the way, there are reflections on history and culture, and remarks on method. Noordzijs theory serves to repair the split that grew, with the invention of printing, between written and typographic letters. He shows us the underlying written quality of all letters, with whatever technology they have been formed.
