Boston University Students Tell It Like It Is Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming to BU * The extremely high cost of living-this is especially difficult for your first taste of off-campus living. * BU is extremely conservative, especially considering the liberal student body. The former president of the University, John Silber, despite being a Democrat, seems as right-wing as they come regarding policies. When petitioning for more lenient visitation rules, students were surprised to hear this widely published response: "It is not our job to provide a 'love nest' for our students." He also disbanded the homosexual student organization at the BU Academy. This, among many other executive decisions made by those running the University, are often the spark for public controversy in the media. Looking at BYU statistically, you realize that what you are getting is a great education at an amazingly low price. But what the statistics can't tell you is the unique and defining experience you will have while attending BYU. Hopefully this book will paint a broader picture of what BYU is and what a BYU student can hope for and expect. On Living Standards: * Visitors of the opposite sex are only allowed in the living room and kitchen and are not allowed to use the bathroom. * Visiting hours are 9 a.m. to 12 midnight, or 1:30 a.m. on Fridays. * Students must abide by the BYU Honor Code. * Students are expected to follow the dress code. * Students are responsible for keeping their guests to these guidelines. On Strictness: "By signing your name to the Honor Code, you are saying that you will live by strict rules, and BYU will not let you forget it. The Honor Code Office is the biggest threat on campus, and no one wants to be called by them. Students will most definitely be kicked out of school for drug and alcohol offenses, as well as possibly suspended for things such as curfew violations and being found in the bedroom of someone of the opposite sex. Again, due to the Mormon culture, things such as cheating and lying are looked down on by peers and not tolerated by authority." On Guys and Girls: "The guys at BYU are pretty stellar, with exceptional academic performance, adequate conversation skills, and admirable goals and ambitions. Just be sure to do the ring check. It's very likely that the hot guy in your biology class is married with two kids." "Seriously, the girls are nicer than I thought they'd be! Traditions - The Van Winkle Gate Every student walks through the main gates of the University exactly twice in their undergraduate career. "The meal plan rips you off. The Ratty was disgusting. I was on the full meal plan. "The on-campus parties are worth checking out for underclassmen, but they're ultimately uninspiring and repetitive. House parties are great, as are a few bars and clubs. Check out Nick-a-Nees, the Red Fez, the Underground, when it's open, and the GCB."
