The abstracts of Laurens County wills run forty pages, name thousands of persons, and are arranged in alphabetical order by the name of the testator.

This is a reprint of a wholly unique and virtually unknown list of 3,000 ships' passengers which was originally published by the Boston Registry Department as part of a larger work. The importance of this ship passenger list lies in the fact that the passengers named embarked from a great many different ports, so an ancestor can be traced from among a wide range of places of origin, some previously unsuspected by the researcher. Each passenger is cited with the name of his ship, exact date of arrival, and occupation.

This work, based on a reading of seventy-three Michigan county histories, consists of an alphabetical list of more than 5,000 persons who moved west from Massachusetts to New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, and other states of the middle west. The purpose throughout is to supply name, date and town of birth, date of removal, and state in which the pioneer settled. Additional information given includes name of spouse, date of marriage, and the complete identification of all sources.

This useful offprint contains biographical sketches of approximately 800 southwestern Pennsylvania residents. The sketches are of Greene County families predominantly, though unavoidably some sketches concern families of Washington or Fayette County provenance. The biographies are conveniently arranged in alphabetical order within township and borough and generally treat subjects who were born in the early nineteenth century, with reference to immediate forebears of the late eighteenth century. Typical sketches mention the date and place of birth and marriage of the biographee; the name of his wife and the names of his children; names with dates and places of birth of his parents and often grandparents; sometimes the name of the first ancestor in America; and details of religion, education, military service, occupation, home, and residence.

When it was erected in 1786, Sumner County was still a part of North Carolina.  Understandably, its early settlers came mostly from the Watauga region, although many came  directly from Virginia. Sumner County was a kind of crossroads in the flow of westward  migration, and many families tarried there--or remained indefinitely--leaving behind a wealth of  tantalizing records. Some had come only recently from the battles of the Revolution; some even  from King's Mountain.     The work in hand consists of abstracts of Will Books 1 and 2 in the county courthouse in  Gallatin, covering the years 1788-1842. Typically, the abstracts, which bear reference to some  3,000 persons, give the name of the testator, date of instrument, names of heirs (usually wives  and children), nature of the bequest, names of witnesses and executors, date of probate, and the  relevant page number of the original will book. All of the names found in the abstracts are easily  accessible via the index at the back of the volume.

In the record office of the City of London is a register containing the names of 3,398 servants bound out for service in the American colonies and the West Indies. Details concerning nearly 2,000 of these indentured servants, taken from the original indenture forms, were published over twenty years ago. Yet information on 1,544 additional servants, whose names appear in the register but for whom no indentures survive, had never been published. With this present work, however, we now have a published list of these missing servants as well as a digest of associated data. In addition to the servant's name and the name of the transporting agent, the tabulation includes the name of the colony to which the servant was shipped and the date--either the date of the indenture form itself or the Assize at which it was registered. The majority of these servants were destined for Maryland, Pennsylvania, or the West Indies.

Franz Rickaby was that rare individual who combined the earthiness of the vagabond with the talent of the musician and the training and patience of the academician. Rickaby, who came from a musical family, dropped out of high school and roamed the countryside for four years, working as a baker, farm laborer, band leader, and printer. After resuming his schooling, he eventually gained admittance to Harvard College, where he earned a Master's Degree. It was after he landed a teaching job at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks that Rickaby cultivated his interest in ballads and in the traditions of the dying lumber camp industry around Grand Forks. He soon became a very skilled collector of lumberjack songs and ballads, accumulating 225 in all, of which 55 appear in this work complete with melody lines. In addition to the songs themselves, which include songs of the sea and the battlefield as well as those dealing with logging, Rickaby's notes, writes W.K. McNeil, "were consistently informative, readable, and up-to-date as of 1925." A sampling of the song titles serves to give a flavor of the book and the life of the lumbermen: "Jack Haggerty's Flat River Girl," "The Shanty-Man's Life," "The Fatal Oak," "The Hanging Limb," "Fair Charlotte," "The Persian's Crew," and "The Dying Soldier." Though Franz Rickaby, who died in 1925 at the age of 36, did not live to see his book published, he produced a work of folklore that is as useful today as it was nearly seventy years ago.
