The Project 11356/M Guided Missile Frigate/Guard Ship was initially developed by Severnoye Design Bureau in Russia to meet an Indian Navy requirement that emerged as the Talwar and Teg Class respectively. The basic design, which was, in 2009, selected for service with the Russian Federation Black Sea Fleet as the Project 11356M, could conduct the full spectrum of Frigate related missions - anti-air warfare, anti-submarine warfare and surface strike etc., courtesy of advanced mission sensors and weapon systems.The volume sets out to detail the Project 11356/M design, sensors, incorporated weapon systems and entry into service with the Indian and Russian Federation navies. All technical data relating to the respective ship platforms, sensors, weapon systems and components have been furnished by the respective design bureaus, builders and operators, as has the imagery/graphics.

The Sukhoi Su-35S (Cy-35C) was developed from the Sukhoi Su-27 air superiority fighter/interceptor as a 4th ++ Multifunctional Super-Manoeuvrable fighter for service with the Russian Federation Air Force, entering service in 2014. In the middle of the first decade of the 21st Century, the Su-35S was born out of the ashes of the original canard-tri-plane Su-35 program that fell by the wayside in the early 2000’s. The Su-30MKK/MK2/M2 family of combat aircraft share the same numerical designation as the Su-30MK/MKI/SM family of multi-role combat aircraft which were clearly derived from the Su-30M, which was, itself, derived from the Su-27UB two-seat operational conversion variant of the Su-27S single-seat air superiority fighter. However, the numerical designation and some first glance looks aside, the Su-30MKK family is fundamentally a different design from the Su-30MKI family in terms of primary design role, internal systems and structure; certainly in regards to the latter the aircraft having more in common with the Su-27M (first generation Su-35) than the Su-27UB or Su-30M. This volume covers the evolution of the Su-30 design from the Su-27, which was born out of the T-10 development program of the 1970’s. The evolution of the Su-30M interceptor into the multi-role Su-30MK is described. The Su-30MKK is covered in detail, as are the improved Su-30MK2 for the export market and the Su-30M2 strike fighter developed for the Russian Federation Air Force. The aircraft and systems are described in detail, as are the weapons that can be employed by the respective variants. The enigma that is the Su-35UB is included as that aircraft, in regards to structure, has more in common with the Su-30MKK family than any other Su-27 family variant. All technical information regarding the aircraft, systems and weapons have been provided by the respective manufacturers, as have many of the photographs and diagrams. Elements of the first and fifth chapters borrow certain texts from the volumes ‘Sukhoi Su-35S ‘Flanker’ E, Russia’s 4++ Generation Super-Manoeuvrability Fighter’ and ‘Sukhoi T-50/PAK FA, Russia’s 5th Generation ‘Stealth’ Fighter’.

Sukhoi Su-30 MKK/MK2/M2: Russo-Kitayshiy Striker from Amur

The X-36 program began in 1989, with the development of technologies required for an agile, tailless fighter. In order to validate these technologies the then McDonnell Douglas Phantom works was contracted to built two 28% scale remotely piloted aircraft for flight testing. These aircraft incorporated many modern aeronautical technologies such as tailless design, thrust-vectoring control, stealth shaping and an advanced digital fly-by-wire flight control system. The first of the X-36 aircraft flew for the first time in May 1997 and conducted several phases of flight testing before the original program ended in November that year. In December 1998, the X-36 flew again under the Reconfigurable Control for Tailless Fighter Aircraft (RESTORE), which was aimed at testing advanced software applications designed to compensate for problems with the control surfaces.’ Only one of the X-36 vehicles ever flew and this aircraft was retired to the National Museum of the United States Air Force in 2003. This volume covers the inception, design, development and flight testing of the X-36, as well as covering previous tailless or quasi-tailless aircraft designs.

This volume covers every turbojet powered fighter aircraft to enter service or be developed for the United States Air Force and its forebear the United States Army Air Force from the Bell XP-59, which flew in 1942 to the McDonnell XF-85 which flew in 1948. While no US designed jet aircraft saw operational service during World War II, many would be employed in the 1950 – 53 Korean War including the F-80 and F-84, both of which were employed in large numbers.

Not since the legendary R.J Mitchell’s Supermarine Spitfire of the 1930’s or the ill fated BAC TSR-2 of the 1960’s has a military aircraft been so much in the Spotlight as Eurofighter Typhoon under its many guises over the last three-decades. Designed primarily as a multi-role fighter to replace a number of combat aircraft types in the air forces of Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, Typhoon has metamorphosed into a world-leading combat aircraft capable of meeting any current or near term adversary. While the initial production batches were delivered with an air combat capability the aircraft was cleared as multi-role capable by the RAF in 2008. Full operational capability scheduled for introduction with Tranche 3 will enable Typhoon to perform the full-spectrum of air to air and air to surface mission. Conceived in the 1980’s, Eurofighter was designed to Cold War requirements, but emerged into a completely different military political environment that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992. The flexibility of the concept allowed the aircraft to absorb the changing military requirements resulting in an aircraft ideally suited to the missions for which it is being procured. The program has been dogged with many problems, both political and technical. Political indecision and the complexities of a four-nation consortium saw the program threatened with reductions and even cancellation. Much blame was laid at Germany’s door with suggestions that the program would have benefited from a German withdrawal. However, this is far too simplistic a view. Germany’s technological and financial contribution to the program has been considerable. With the fall of the Berlin wall and the subsequent unification of East and West Germany, Germany was handed the burden of financing the re-unification, an expense that none of the other three partner nations had to contend with. The program survival was assured when the Eurofighter Consortium and the four-partner governments in 1998 signed an umbrella contract for 620 aircraft. The Eurofighter Typhoon production phase has been underway for more than a decade, with the first two-seat instrumented production aircraft flying for the first time in April 2002. The first two-seat series production aircraft conducted its first flight in February 2003; with first deliveries to air forces of the four partner nations commencing in the second half of that year, following four-nation type acceptance in June 2003. All four countries had taken delivery of their initial two-seat Tranche 1 Typhoons by the end of 2003, and the first instrumented production single-seat Typhoon conducted its maiden flight on 27 February 2004. By late 2011, 300 Typhoons had been delivered to six different customers. Austria had become the first export customer when it took delivery of the first of 15 aircraft in 2007. Saudi Arabia ordered 72 Typhoons to replace its fleet of Panavia Tornados’, with the first two Typhoons being delivered in June 2009. The aircraft is described in detail as are its systems and weapons. The development aircraft flight test program is covered comprehensively as is the follow on Instrumented Production Aircraft program and on toe series production and operational service. Future developments cover the development of the Captor-E Active Electronic Scanned Array, which is planned for future production batches. The developments of the thrust-vector controlled Typhoon is covered including manufactures figures showing the benefits of such a system. Eurofighter Typhoon: Storm over Europe

In spring 1999 the NATO Alliance launched Operation Allied Force - a sustained 79 day bombing campaign against Serbia. This campaign saw the USAF employ all three types of strategic bombers in its inventory, the B-52H, B-1B and B-2A, with a diversity of guided and unguided ordnance being employed. The purpose of this volume is to describe the operational use of the triad of USAF strategic bombers employed against Serbia. It is not the remit of this volume to discuss the rights and wrongs of the campaign, or give an in depth political or military analysis, although there will, of course, be occasions when politics and ethics emerge in the narration of events. The volume also briefly describes the strategic bomber trio, B-52H, B-1B and B-2A, employed in the campaign, as well as the ordnance dropped, and narrates the strategic bomber roadway from the United States extraction from the Vietnam War in 1973 to the inventory in 1999. Appendices detail the bombers that took part in the operation and the weapons employed. All facts and figures used in the preparation of this volume have come from official source documentation such as the USAF and NATO.

The Lockheed Martin X-35 Concept Demonstrator Aircraft was the winning contender in the international Joint Strike Fighter program, which led to X-35 and rival Boeing X-32, both of which were demonstrated in 2000/2001, with the prize being nothing less than domination of the production of 5th generation combat aircraft for the United States and many other countries for the next few decades. The JSF program, which spawned the X-35, was borne out a number of different research programs conducted in the 1980’s and 1990’s. A number of programs were combined to form a core program to replace a number of different legacy aircraft types on both sides of the Atlantic. The X-35 would be further developed into the F-35 Lightning II 5th generation strike fighter, formerly known as the JSF (Joint Strike Fighter), entering service with air forces on both sides of the Atlantic.     This volume details the genesis of the Joint Strike Fighter program and describes the development, manufacture and flight testing of all three variants of the X-35: the X-35A conventional take-off and landing; X-35B short take off and vertical landing and the X-35C aircraft carrier variant, along with an overview of the rival Boeing X-32 design. X-35: Progenitor to the F-35 Lightning II (Research & Development Aircraft)

The Nimrod MRA4 was an ambitious program intended to provide the British Royal Air Force with a high capability multi-mission aircraft with an emphasis on anti-submarine warfare/anti-surface strike/maritime patrol missions. As the focus of the volume is the Nimrod MRA4 program, only a brief resume of the design heritage going back to the first and second generation Nimrod, themselves derived from the de Havilland DH106 Comet 4, is provided. The volume draws on textual and graphic material from the respective design house/test team and governmental papers in an attempt to arrive at an objective account of the program from inception, development/testing, to cancellation, almost on the eve of service entry.
