This book, published in Olson's centennial year, is a study in letters of Charles Olson and a sampling of ten people in Gloucester who were part of his circle: artists, writers, a publisher, a museum president, an inventor, an architect. Editor David Rich has taken the unusual step of arranging each chapter by correspondent and presenting both sides of each exchange when possible: the result is a group portrait, with Olson at the center, of a vibrant literary and artistic scene.

A bound guide to the permanent installation at the Cape Ann Museum by ceramic artist Diane KW. The 66-page full color catalog features an introduction to the installation written by the artist, an essay by Cape Ann Museum Librarian/Archivist Stephanie Buck, and a full inventory of the ceramic shards with transcription of the diary and logbook text. "Strong Breezes &amp; Passing Clouds" is a permanent work made up of approximately 200 shipwreck shards and six Chinese export plates installed on five walls of "functional" space at the Cape Ann Museum. The shards date from circa 1625 to 1865 and the Chinese export plates from circa 1735 to 1750. Excerpts from the 1838 ship's log of Gloucester Captain Edward Babson of the brig Cadet and the 1838 diary of his wife, Amanda Babson, have been applied to the shipwreck shards and the Chinese export plates. Interspersed amidst the diary and log entries are family photos and excerpts from the "Gloucester Marine Journal" reporting ships lost or missing at sea as well as excerpts from the brig Cadet's accounts book.

"Homer at the Beach: A Marine Painter's Journey 1869-1880". The Cape Ann Museum's exhibition "Homer at the Beach: A Marine Painter's Journey, 1869-1880" charts Winslow Homer's (1836-1910) artistic formation as a marine painter, focusing on eleven seminal years (1869-1880) and a physical journey to six waterfront locations. This voyage from New Jersey to Maine-including multiple visits to Gloucester and other parts of Cape Ann-forever changed Homer's life and was pivotal in his development as a nationally significant artist.
 Time spent on Cape Ann was critical to Homer's development. It was in Gloucester in 1873 that Homer made his first watercolors, and during the summer of 1880 on Ten Pound Island in Gloucester Harbor, his mastery of the watercolor medium reached new heights. Homer's innate powers of observation captured the essence of the people he encountered and their sense of place-unique in each case, and distinctly American. "Homer at the Beach" documents Homer's journey of artistic discovery, providing a rare opportunity to view the artist's work in adjacency to the settings that inspired their creation and alongside a range of important contextualizing objects.
