The city walls of Canterbury are some of the most interesting, and in places best-preserved structures of their kind in southern England. Since the destruction that took place as a result of WW2, a great deal of new information has been obtained, including the discovery that the medieval city wall was on the same line as the Roman wall. Sites covered include the Castle; Riding Gate; City Wall in the Old Cattle Market; Worth Gate; 19 Pound Lane, as well as a section on the exceptionally fine West Gate and an assessment of finds.

Canterbury Excavations Intra- and Extra-Mural Sites 1949-55 and 1980-84 (The Archaelogy of Canterbury)

A detailed report on excavations carried out at the site of St Gregory's Priory that revealed two major ecclesiastical buildings. The earliest church, founded by Archbishop Lanfranc in AD 1084 became a priory in 1133; it was rebuilt after a great fire in 1145, probably under the patronage of Archbishop Theobald, and was eventually dissolved in 1537. This large report outlines the historical and archaeological sequence at the site, describing the remains of the various structures recovered (including the church, chapter house, cloister, infirmary, refectory, courtyards), the architectural fragments and small finds.

In 1986 a medieval pottery kiln was excavated at Pund Lane, Canterbury which appears to have been worked by a continental potter, perhaps a Norman, around the middle of the 12th century. The report contains a short account of the site and excavation, followed by a detailed account of the kiln itself and an extensive typology of the kiln products. The local, English and European contexts of the Ound Lane industry are examined and an attempt is made to define the likely homeland of the immigrant potter.

The widening of the road between the Monkton and Mount Pleasant roundabouts on the A253 led to the archaeological investigation of a 3km long strip of land between July 1994 and February 1995. Prehistoric discoveries included Neolithic inhumations and pits, well-preserved Beaker graves and ten ring-ditches of late Neolithic and Bronze Age date. An extensive and unusual Roman settlement of the late first to early second century AD was characterised by a large number of sunken-floored buildings. A small rectangular structure on the fringes of the settlement may have been a roadside shrine. A small Anglo-Saxon cemetery was located at the eastern end of the excavated area and at the western end a medieval farmstead with at least five buildings was investigated. The information is presented in four parts covering the main periods of occupation of the site and each chapter includes specialist reports on pottery, small finds, human and animal bones and the plant and insect remains.

Between January 1992 and October 1997 watching briefs, evaluations and an excavation were conducted on the route of the Wainscott Northern Link or by-pass. This relief road was constructed over a distance of 5km from the junction of the A2 and M2, west of the original Medway crossing at Rochester north-east to the Four Elms roundabout on the A228 north of Wainscott. Other than scatters of loose finds, little archaeological material was discovered over most of the route, but west of the Four Elms roundabout a multi-period settlement site was excavated. About 350 separate features and deposit sequences were examined, which may be divided into four periods: Prehistoric; Roman; Anglo-Saxon; Medieval and Post-medieval. The site, excavation and finds are all presented and assessed here and each period discussed.

The 1994 excavations at Buckland, Dover, uncovered another 244 graves in the extensive Anglo-Saxon cemetery first excavated by Professor Vera Evison in 1951-3. Just over two thirds of the burials contained grave goods. Several male burials contained a sword, others a spear and sometimes a shield. Women's graves included brooches and beads and a variety of other objects. The excavation was undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust with the assistance of the British Museum. This detailed study of the cemetery, the individuals interred therein and their grave goods is the product of this close liaison.
