<p>HORSES is an episodic novel in five parts. The narrator is Crestwell Holmes, a handsome Englishman, who makes his living traveling about the state of California shoeing horses. In PART ONE: Heritage Oaks Farm, Crestwell arrives at a farm of the most sumptuous luxury owned by Luke and Aaron, and almost immediately things get off to a gay start when Luke rolls out the reddest of red carpets in friendship. Things get even gayer as Crestwell shares a midnight swim with Washington, the farm's enigmatic black foreman. PART TWO: Paragon Studios finds Crestwell at Jessup Miltwinger's Hollywood movie studio where the two men indulge in recollections of their shared past - and Jessup tells a tall tale - and then move on to something a little hotter and quite a bit raunchier. PART THREE: Iron Tree Meet at San Ramon takes place at a racetrack of extraordinary opulence. There we meet Tony Scotto, wealthy scion of meat packing wealth, jockeys Manny Pineda and Tim Conley, and dazzli! ng socialite Dresden Marshall and his Hungarian trainer, Janos. The action is fast and fresh, the locales interesting and attractive. In PART FOUR: The Dude's Dues we are invited into another fanciful Stalward creation of place, this time a wonderful rich man's hideaway on the California desert. Here we meet Sergeant Major Wendell Corman USMCR Ret., Zeek Hack Zong, local veterinary, and Mr. Leon Hubble, a stubbornly sexy septuagenarian. A scene played out in an irrigation pump house with Mr. Hubble and a certain fellow named Davenport is hilarious. PART FIVE: Sierra Sidekicks offers up yet another original locale, a sort of summer camp for more or less mature boys of all ages. Here we are introduced to Carroll, a monumental muleskinner - six feet, eight inches with shoulders 'wider than most doorways' - who has appetites as robust as his physique. This stupendous man and Crestwell, and Brian and Cass, two boys up from the fast glitter of the city, stage an early morning get together in a lovely, leafy, wet grotto, and from which Brian and! Cass gain a better understanding of the nature and duality of lust and love. Crusty Carroll has his own well-considered opinion of the matter while Crestwell expresses his sentiments in a brief, gentle paean of the enduring nature of love.</p>
